1. I'm pretty sure
that they both voted against it.

3. We're both wrong
It looks like Collins voted for it and Snowe didn't vote at all.

12 Democrats voted with the Republicans and only Lincoln Chaffee defected from his side. 65-34 vote.

5. I would imagine
that she was at her aunt's funeral.

9. As much as I dislike the woman I can't blame her for being absent
The woman who raised her died. Olympia can't be blamed for this one.

Although it does make it more convenient for her at election time. Still, she had a very legitimate reason for missing the vote.

10. From what I understand...
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 01:00 PM by woldnewton
from talking to Bill Slavick, the only decent candidate running against her, this morning, she would have voted *FOR* it, so perhaps it's a good thing that she was absent for the vote.

11. Indeed
Good 'ol Lincoln... is he running for re-election this year? I thought I read somewhere he was and wasn't doing well... at least when he loses he'll be replaced by a Democrat I would assume.

6. I hate to admit it, but I didn't bother contacting either Senator
this time. I've called, written and marched so many times, to no avail. These two women are politicians, not patriots.

7. I wish you were wrong but...
Unfortunately you are very correct. I work with a freeper evangelical nut bag and it seems that he and I are constantly calling & writing to Snowe and Collins from opposite sides of the same issue. Although we try to avoid one another most of the time, we do permit conversation when either or both of us receives a response form letter from either of the senators' offices. We share both a laugh and feeling of disgust when we each receive a "response" that states that the senators agree with our views...views that are polar opposites on the same issue.

We discussed saving our original letters and response letters and sending them back to their offices asking for explanation, but I decided I would rather vote both of them out office. I am asking, no begging, everyone I know to vote democratic each and every time either of these two faced politicians comes up for re-election. However, it is a very tough sell. So many Mainers believe in these two women and think they are the lone voices of reason in the Senate. I keep hearing how independent and moderate they are and how they "vote the voice of Maine".

Frustrating.

8. Yes. Not only are they "independent and moderate"
but they are also highly regarded nationally. I fail to see why as their opinions and their votes (which occasionally diverge) are etirely self-serving and clearly have little or nothing to do with representing their constituents. Frustrating indeed. Oh, and welcome to DU! :hi:

12. That's true but there are people out there who see through them
I have an "Impeach Bush" bumpersticker on my car and this results in some interesting conversations with people in parking lots. Yesterday a woman I was parked next to wanted to know where I got my bumpersticker and this resulted in a conversation about the senate race. I told her if she wanted to do something about the shrub regime that she could vote for our Democratic senate candidate. She said that she already knew about her and that she and her husband and her father, a former republican, would all be voting for her. She said she was not going to be taken in by Snow job again and that she understands that our country faces a major crisis. The lady was not a party activist or political sophisticate, just a regular working person who understands the stakes of this election. While I understand that this is not a general indication that there will be an upset victory or anything, it at least left me feeling a bit more hopeful that at least some of my fellow Mainers see through Snow and Collins and understand that they have done nothing to resist the facist takeover of this country and if anything have been enablers of it.

13. They Talk a Good Game
Unfortunately they don't play a good game. They like pose as voices of Republican reason but they always find a way to vote with the Bush bunch. They voted for Roberts with the proviso that the second Justice appointed by Bush be a moderate and then somehow found a way to support Alito. They withheld support of MEDICARE D until they had a supposed promise from GOP leadership that the no price negotiation and "donut hole" features would be fixed after the 2004 election. Where's their outrage two years later and still no revisiting of the MEDICARE D mess. Susie Q voted for torture and the widespread elimination of habeas corpus and so would have Olympia if she hadn't been absent. So far neither of these two have seen an attack on constitutionally protected personal freedoms that they couldn't eventually swallow. After their "service" during the Bush Administration neither will be confused with the long honored moderate tradition of the Maine GOP that was embodied by the likes of Margaret Chase Smith, Stan Tupper and Bill Cohen. Rather they are just politically astute and sophisticated members of the Ray Richardson, Scott Landsley crowd.
