What happened today on Gay Marriage Ban in La.?
I was at the sink preparing dinner, and just heard a snippet. Also was on Yahoo, but my computer went down, and when I rebooted, the article was gone. Help somebody.

1. La. supreme court tossed that garbage out!
Said it's unconstitutional to ban marriage AND civil unions in one referendum.

2. What a crap excuse
But it buys us some time to get organized. Honestly, it was snuck by right under my nose. I didn't even know it was up for vote. In fact, I think it's pretty shitty that the local news tells me the results but didn't bother telling anyone it was up for vote in the first place. There was absolutely NO coverage on this issue.

Meanwhile, I'm writing letters, e-mails, etc...

Also keep an eye on our Senate race. Those Vitter commercials are so cute, my girlfriend wants to vote for him. The only democratic candidate that has a shot of taking him is Johns...and he's pussin' out on the gay marriage issue. Ironically, Vitter and Johns are both pushing the "Canadian medication prices" point in their ads.

3. Chris Johns....
vehemently supports cockfighting. Says he will do all in his power to keep it legal in La. Disgusting that he and Vitter are our likely choices for representation. On the other hand I'd rather have a flat out republican than a republican in democrats clothes ala Breaux. Well, maybe not.
Regarding gay marriage amendment, gay & lesbian activist groups didn't even bother to spend any money or time in La, conceding the loss in advance. Which is probably why you never heard anything about it unless you saw no on one signs around or picked up a Gambit.
This judge is courageous, he's probably being barraged with hate mail and threats.
I think the courts were the only way for a win here on this issue, no way would the majority of Louisianans vote for progressive measures.
Some day, hopefully in our lifetime, people will shake their heads at the thought of the bigotry involved that even makes this an issue, just as we do now regarding desegregation.

4. crap excuse indeed
The sad truth is: the people of Louisiana will just vote to approve whatever number of amendments it takes to successfully ban gay marriage. I'm pretty sure it wasn't legal in the first place so it seems like a bit of a distraction to me. They'll simply rewrite it into 2-4 new amendments and the people will overwhelmingly support it :(

As far as the Vitter thing goes, John supported importing the drugs before Vitter did but since Vitter put his ideas into a TV spot before John, I guess he owns the issue. Not only will NONE of the candidates touch the gay marriage issue, none of them will touch the Assault Weapons Ban Expiration either (except Arthur Morrell) I don't really care for Johns...Morrell is my favorite and 2nd to that is Kennedy

BTW Welcome to DU Shreddasaurous!

Feel free to join our local grassroots organization called Louisiana Progress Action Network. http://www.progressactionnetwork.com

Select Forums and set up a username over there so that you can keep track of what we're up to. Last weekend we completed a week long voter registration drive that netted around 1400 registrations. We were covered by two TV news agencies as well as the Times Picayune.
