Branstad picks Miller-Meeks for health post
*hurl*

----------------------------

Gov.-elect Terry Branstad has appointed a former director of the Department of Human Services to again head the agency and has chosen a former Republican congressional candidate to lead the Department of Public Health.

Branstad appointed Chuck Palmer as director of the Department of Human Services, a position he held from 1989 to 1999. DHS is the state’s largest agency, with 5,500 workers.

Branstad picked Ottumwa ophthalmologist Mariannette Miller-Meeks as public health director. She twice ran for the U.S. House in Iowa’s 2nd District, losing both times to Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack.

1. I've been trying to cut back on my drinking.
But maybe I'll just postpone that for a couple years.

Ugh. :puke:

4. A look to the future of Iowa?
Omaha World Herald

LINCOLN — Candle flames flickered in the wind Tuesday at a vigil for five babies who have died since Nebraska cut off Medicaid prenatal care for more than 1,500 women.

A small group gathered on the steps of the State Capitol to call attention to the consequences of the policy change.

“Standing witness is important,” said Rev. Neal Jose Wilkinson, a priest who works with Omaha’s Hispanic community.

Health officials have told lawmakers that five infants — four stillborn in Columbus and one born premature in Omaha — died since the March 1 change.

Fear of money wasted on immigrant babies make for very bad policies.
