Mayor Daley's brother is considering running for Burris' seat
Former Commerce Secretary William Daley is leaning toward running for the Senate seat President Obama once held, sources close to Daley tell The Hill. They characterize the decision as all but finalized.

Daley would likely be an instant front-runner in the race to replace Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.). Though the White House may be loath to get involved in a primary, it would be hard to overlook the fact that Daley was a co-chairman of Obama’s presidential campaign and the transition team.

Daley has already ruled out a run for governor in 2010, deferring to new Gov. Pat Quinn (D). But adding fuel to the rumors of an impending Senate run, a Daley fan has snapped up several websites for Daley's use, according to a Chicago Sun-Times columnist. The domain names were all registered within the past week.

. . .
A national political player for decades and a former member of Bill Clinton’s Cabinet, Daley is a top official in the Midwestern office of J.P. Morgan Chase. Daley's older brother Richard is the powerful mayor of Chicago and controls a vaunted political machine that would give his brother a leg up in the Democratic primary.

1. As bad as this would be, I'd take him over Burris in a heartbeat.
Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

3. bah. all you daley bashers.
man, it sucks to be a dem. i defend my mayor at every opportunity, but it sure is a thankless job.
he has been a great mayor, my city is more beautiful than ever, the infrastructure is being carefully tended, and the local economy is in much better shape than most of the country. and it was before the crash, as well. the home of some of the last great jobs in america.
don't be whiners.
as far as billy, i can't say as i have intimate knowledge of his deeds, but if he was a part of the obama transition team, that is good enough for me.

personally, i hope we have a spirited process, and the best woman wins. (my congresswoman, jan schakowsky, that is.)

6. LOL...go our mayor!
My feelings for Daley are so complicated. I can't help but have a soft spot for him.

I remember what our city was like in the late 80s and early 90s.

Plus, I *like* that he kicks the shit out of Republicans on a daily basis. It's something that is necessary. Every successful politician that we've ever had (the United States that is) has been an effective POLITICIAN first and foremost. You can't get shit done if you're not. It would be great if we could find someone pure of heart to lead us...but...such is life in a Democracy.

Plato pointed this out in Republic.

7. yup, i remember when you wouldn't get caught dead downtown after 6 pm.
it was a ghost town.
look, i wish he was "pure", but that is not gonna happen. ever.
and i really feel for the guy. the thought of trying to get things done when they have to be approved by bernie stone, joe moore, ginger rugia, and wm banks, it makes me want to beat my head against the wall just thinking about it. that is why he ends up pissing people off. he tries to get it done without them. i don't blame him.
but all the new schools, libraries, police and fire stations, parks, and of course, sewers. the man loves the city with all his heart. it shows.
he can be mayor for life as far as i am concerned.

14. I've always kind of liked Daley (the younger) too, BUT...
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 03:38 PM by whathehell
An older Black cab driver once told me that the Chicago cops used to torture suspects and that Daley, who was not yet mayor, but Lieutenant Governor or something (I'm not a native Chicagoan) knew about it and tolerated it.

That's hard to forget.

What say you, Chicagoans?
