1160 goes to 1690 on the dial, displacing Air Atlanta
and I haven't been able to find anything about what's happening to Air Atlanta, but here's the 1160-AM site report:

http://www.am1160.net/

FWIW, I have nothing against 1160's programming--if anything they sound like they deserve a better station. But I'm very concerned about what this means for Air Atlanta.

If it switches to 1160, its already-weak signal will be weakened.

and if it's dropped, who knows how long it'll be before another AM station decides to pick up AAR's programming.

1. It looks like they are trying to move it to 1160.
At least that's the response I received from the current 1160 administration.

We should be happy about this. For a while it looked like we might lose it altogether.

2. Oddly enough, I seem to pull in 1160 better than 1690.
Just me and my commute, mind you.

BTW, have you ever listened to the 1160 programming? From what I've heard, it is actually a pretty cool station, for what is ostensibly an "oldies" outlet; much more off-beat than I'd expect.

Another weird thing is that they are moving 1160 to 1690 in order to take advantage of 1690's allegedly stronger night-time signal. But at night, I almost always hear some Chicago oldies station overpowering 1690, so I don't see the point.

Anyway, let's hope AAR does have a home next week.

3. I heard AAR on 1690 this morning, but
if Air Atlanta does move to 1160, it could be a good thing. Some older car radios don't have 1690 as an available frequency, so the move to 1160 could gain them more listeners.

5. Any radio that can't pick up the Extended AM broadcast band: 1610-1710 kHz
That would include cars older than 1993. Believe it or not, there are folks who do still drive cars that old. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_AM_broadcast_band for more info. on the X-Band.

8. Golden-Ager cars
My 1987 Jeep Renegade gets 1190 just fine. But forget it when the sun goes down.

6. I am driving a 1999 car and I can't pick up AAR on 1690
either in Marietta where I work or at home in Woodstock.

7. I'm talking about radios that don't even HAVE 1690 on the dial
Radios older than 1993 can't even try to tune in that frequency.

You're right, though--coverage outside of 285 is pretty spotty. I'd like to see them beef up their transmitter to get a larger audience.
