Safeway
I've been going to the same Safeway grocery store for many years. Most there know me. It's a comfort thing. After last week I just made my last visit to that store. They have lost my business.

While standing in line at the checkout I looked down at the little counter that you use to write checks and stuff. On it was an advertisement.... said .....

One Nation Under God.... Let Freedom Reign in bold letters advertisting a Christian Youth Center.
:wtf:

Now I'm tolerant of any religion or "non-religion". If you want to Worship the Devil... go for it. It's just that I've been hit several times lately with people trying to shove their religion on me and this little advert at Safeway pushed me over the edge.

"One Nation Under God and Let Freedom Reign" are both bullshit phrases that are historically inaccurate... fabricated by the religious right and the wacko right. And I have to see this crap in my grocery store? Not anymore....

BTW: I looked and saw this same "advert" on every checkout lane. Fuck Safeway.

1. I believe Safeway donates to Republicans
but so do the other grocery store chains in Colorado. It's possible that was a paid advertisement, though. It doesn't mean Safeway supports that particular organization.

2. CEO Steven Burd is big GOP supporter. Check out this 2003 article
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0714-05.htm

Bush 'Bundlers' Take Fundraising to New Level
by Thomas B. Edsall and Mike Allen

As chairman, president and chief executive of Safeway Inc., the world's 11th-largest grocery chain, Steven Burd is the nexus of a wide network of subordinates and suppliers, as well as friends in corporate suites. And that is why he will play a critical role in President Bush's effort to raise the largest amount of money ever spent on a presidential campaign -- not by giving a lot of money himself, but by finding a lot of people to give relatively little.

At two Bush fundraising events in California last month, Burd filled 10 tables with Safeway suppliers, including rice farmers, strawberry growers and a cheese manufacturer, plus representatives of Breyers ice cream, Sunkist produce and Del Monte canned goods who paid $2,000 to hear Bush talk. Each donor wrote a four-digit "solicitor tracking code" assigned to Burd on his check so that the Safeway CEO will receive credit from Bush campaign officials and they can keep a running tally of his efforts....

BTW, After I saw that article in 2003, I stopped shopping at Safeway and sent them an e-mail telling them.

3. Safeway is bad, but...
They are also union, pay union wages, and provide very affordable health insurance for their employees. King Stoopids does too (they're owned by Kroger). It's a tough decision to shop there knowing the CEO is a big Repug supporter, but they are a union company, which makes the bite less painful.

You could do the Super Target/Wal-Mart, but neither pay union wages, and neither offer affordable health care for their workers (excuse me, they like to call them "associates" :puke: ), and neither have a majority of full time workers.

4. I stay out of Wal-Mart/Super Target. Some Safeways are not union.
The one in Erie is not. My thoughts are that Safeways outside of the metro area may not all be union. Safeway was a very good company but they´re slowing becoming Walmartized.

6. What about Costco?
We stopped going to Costco cause' it was so far and we always ended up buying more than what was on our "list".

I know it's wrong to screw union people because of the repuke corporations that they work for and I know that I'm probably over-reacting, but it was like They Live Part 2. This was 1 part advertising and 100 parts propaganda. This shit just has me worn down and I just can't support a company with my business that spits out this crap.

7. Try complaining. It works for the fundies.
They don't know why you stopped shopping there unless you tell them.

Mine in Cap Hill doesn't have them...yet.

5. You know, Whole Foods runs a good store...
maybe you pay a little more, but I dunno. I sleep better at night, and their food is really fucking good. I mean, tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, good fish, and you're hard pressed to find any disgruntled employees. This isn't meant as a plug for them, by the way, and I'm probably missing some key points. End of the day, it's not right to preach from the checkout line, the movie theatre, or the convenience store. That's what churches are for. Also, I'd reccomend staying out of Wal-Mart on account of your odds of being greeted by someone with a "Passion of the Christ" movie button, or some such crap is very high. You can always tell the "True Believers" by that vacant look in their eye!
