SAN FRANCISCO — Democrats might have taken a drubbing at the ballot box in November, but that's not because the party doesn't know what it stands for, former vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Thursday.
Democrats stand for equal protection under the law, for standing up for the voiceless and powerless, for offering opportunity and rewarding hard work, for choosing hope over despair and for offering a helping hand to those who struggle, the former Senator from North Carolina told the Bar Association of San Francisco at the Pan Pacific Hotel on Post Street.

Speaking to the Bar Association, Edwards blasted a bankruptcy reform bill passed last week by the GOP-dominated Senate. He said this bill kicks working people when they're sick or unemployed without addressing corporate bankruptcy abuse or limiting credit-card companies' gouging of their customers.
This, as well as health savings accounts that would be "a big tax haven for millionaires" and Social Security private investment accounts that would give Wall Street a $1 trillion windfall without securing Americans' retirements, is part of a Bush administration theme, Edwards said.
"What George Bush's 'ownership society' is, is a private club," he said. "What we really need is an opportunity society ... and you create an opportunity society by honoring work" instead of protecting wealth.
