Public help sought to find man wanted in San Diego freeway shootings
Source: East County Magazine

October 3, 2011 (San Diego)—Investigators have identified Enrique Ayon, 24, as a person of interest who may be involved in or have information pertaining to a series of freeway shootings this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. Ayon’s vehicle is a white 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, CA license 5POM917. He is Hispanic, 5’8”, 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If you have information on Ayon or see him or his vehicle, call 911 immediately.

The shooting spree began at around 10:30 a.m., when a vehicle on I-805 northbound at Plaza Blvd. was pierced by a bullet; no one was injured in that incident. A second shooting wounded a motorist in the thigh at the Mesa College exit on I-805. Later, bullet holes were shot through the side of an ambulance from Lemon Grove on I-5 north in Del Mar.

Motive is unknown and authorities believe the victims were randomly targeted. The incidents resulted in shut-down of I-805 and later, I-5 during today's investigation, causing major traffic headaches for commuters.

Southern California DUers - please forward this widely. The car is registered in Lancaster County and was last seen heading north on I-5. This was a pretty terrifying day for motorists in San Diego, but this guy could be anywhere by now. Let's get the word out so maybe someone will spot this vehicle. Some witnesses said there were two men in the car and it is unclear whether Ayon was the driver or passenger, or who was doing the shooting.

1. Been a rough few days on the freeways
Nasty pileup on the 15 messed up Miramar airshow traffic for hours. An off-duty San Diego cop who stopped to help was struck and killed by an off-duty Border Patrol Officer...it don't get much more tragically ironic than that.

I have a very good friend who drives a white 'bu. Wonder how many times he'll get pulled over the next couple days.

2. They have the license #, so I doubt there will be a lot of false stops.
It has been a bad week on the freeways. There was a fatality tonight in La Mesa (pedestrian running across the road) and a couple of others in the past 2 days.

As for the Miramar pileup, I didn't know that it was an off-duty BP officer who hit the SDPD off-duty officer. Where did you hear that? Sad.

5. That was in the Union -Tribune
As for my friend getting stopped--it was kind of half-joking. The shooter may have swapped tags; if I were driving the suspect vehicle, the first thing I would do if I couldn't get rid of the car is steal a set of plates.

And speaking of bad times on the freeways...we are about to get our first rain of the season.

3. The police only need to go to the next TeaBagger rally
The police should go to the next TeaBag get together and look for the guy with the right caliber rifle slung over his shoulder.

The system alienated them a long time ago.

10. Ethnicity, age, selection of automobile, and overt behavior
Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 09:39 AM by slackmaster
If his name was Trung Nguyen, age 29, and he drove around shooting people from an Acura, I would have said exactly the same thing. ;-)

If his name was Joe Smith, same age, and did the same thing from a Chevrolet pickup truck I would have said he sounded like a (skinhead) gang member.

12. but you didn't mention age, automobile or behavior...
you just said that with a name like...

Now from that name i can determine his likely ethnicity and ...his name.

So, I ask again.

So, I ask again.

Did you read the article cited in the OP? It spells out his race (or ethnicity if you prefer), his age, and the type of car he is driving.

What exactly are you asking, and why?

(ETA I suspect that you don't live in Southern California.)

BTW, he COULD be a lone nutter, but most lone nutters tend to look more like me than like a young Hispanic guy.

14. I ask simply for you to defend this statement:
"I doubt that someone named Enrique Ayon is going to turn out to be anything other than a gang member"

Your words, quoted exactly.

Why is that?

I showed them a couple of your silly posts on my Blackberry. We had a good laugh about it.

4. Lancaster County?
I did not read the article but I think that might be "City of Lancaster", Los Angeles County.

8. Yes, there is no Lancaster County in California
But there is a city of Lancaster, and it has more than its share of gang crime.

23. Suspect in freeway shootings booked into jail in San Diego
...Ayon was booked into San Diego Central Jail shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday on counts of discharging a firearm, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, and shooting into an inhabited dwelling or vehicle, a jail spokeswoman said.

He was scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in San Diego Superior Court, according to the jail website.

Ayon’s car is registered out of Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, where court records show he has had numerous contacts with law enforcement over the past two years for crimes that include drug and weapon possession....

Captain Renault is SHOCKED that the suspect has an extensive criminal record, and is prohibited by law from carrying weapons!
