1. Awesome
San Gabriel Valley: mandarins, lemons, squash, eggplant, parsley, mesclun, cherry tomatoes, ginger(!), avocado, sweet pea, maybe some cantaloupe or watermelon. Plus spices. Yum.

5. Big pot, compost & dirt, plenty of sun, plenty of water.
But it's gotta be hot, at least in the high 50s at night.

I buy it at the store, cut in pieces, sort of like potatos, and put it 1" deep. It might not be hot enough where you are, I was surprised it would grow here. But it does, and it's easy.

7. Slacker!
 ;-)

Several years ago I got these little mini greenhouse planter type things (a planter tray with a water tray underneath with a clear, hard plastic lid) and they're GREAT for starts! I'm now seeing these set-ups in grocery stores this spring. Anyway, I've been able to do starts in February (I prefer starting from seeds as it's cheaper than buying starts).

Most of my winter garden is still going strong (spinach, swisschard, lettuce, collard greens and snow peas) but as soon as those are spent, the new plants are ready to go. This summer it will be peppers and tomatoes (in pots), zucchini, yellow squash, gutas (Armenian cucumbers), potatoes, shallots, and scallions.

Got thousands of little sprouts of various varieties coming up now. Can't wait for the colors, as they are more visible from the house than the vegetable/fruit tree area. :)
