WASHINGTON – Rep. Loretta Sanchez says she may run for governor – in 2010.
The Democratic political diva of Orange County has created "People for Loretta 2010," a political committee that allows her to raise money for a governor's race. "I think I need to go home and fix my state," the Santa Ana Democrat said in an interview on Friday. "I'm just keeping my options open. People know I love California. I come home every weekend." Despite taking this step, Sanchez isn't saying she's definitely going to run.

Demographics: Sanchez would be running in a state where women are 58 percent of the electorate. She is also a Latina. Hispanics comprise the fastest-growing voter bloc.
Name recognition: It's difficult for any one of California's 53 House members to break out, though Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., did in 1992. It's unclear how well-known Sanchez is outside of Orange County.

Political baggage: Party activists still remember the flap over Sanchez wanting to hold a fundraiser at the Playboy Mansion during the 2000 Democratic convention in Los Angeles. And some were unhappy that she toyed with getting in the governor's race during the recall.
(snip)
Legislative record: Sanchez has never gotten a significant bill passed, something not unusual for someone who has been in the minority party during their entire House tenure.
