Are there any DUer's familiar with Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles?
I'm trying to figure out where the fire is.

The news reports are vague. I can't tell from looking at the maps. Any DUer's from Topanga Canyon (Los Angeles) who could update me? Thanks.

1. I thought it was in Chatsworth
How far-spread is the fire? From news reports, I got the feeling that it was in the Thousand Oaks area and I thought there was burning in Calabasas too. I'm pretty confused as to how wide an area its burning in.

2. I know a little
The fire started in the Chatsworth area - north of the 118 and just barely west of Topanga Canyon Blvd. It burned up southwest toward Bell Canyon and that area. Looks like they have a leg up on it. I think they have even cancelled the evacuation order as of a few minuted ago.

7. They're calling it Topanga Fire, but the map doesn't seem to be Topanga.
Looks like it's on the other side of 101, is that right?

17. We locals are all laughing at how the media dubbed this fire the
"Topanga" fire. It is most certainly NOT in or anywhere near Topanga Canyon, or the community of Topanga. Both of those are south of the 101 freeway.

I think the name started because where the fire began was at the northern terminus of Topanga Canyon Blvd, in Chatsworth (NW corner of the San Fernando Valley). It has spread SW clear to the edge of Hidden Hills, Old Agoura, and Oak Park. It has not jumped the 101 freeway and is not expected to. Weather has cooled off and the Santa Ana winds quit blowing.

Other affected areas (this fire) are Box Canyon, Woolsey Canyon, Dayton Canyon, Bell Canyon, southern edge of Simi Valley. These are all suburban neighborhoods and not separate cities. The burn area is in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (National Park Service) land. Some of it is what used to be the Ahmanson Ranch, I think. The last time it burned through here was maybe 1978? Then the fire did jump the 101 and go all the way to the Pacific coast at Malibu. Fire control is better now.

18. don't feel badly
The media refers to my area as "the high desert" even though that takes up a larger area than Los Angeles and encompasses more than the county. lol

10. At the moment...
From people I've talked to down there, they don't expect to be able to control the fire until it has jumped 101 and burned all the way down Topanga Canyon and the adjacent mountains to the ocean near Malibu. Given that path, Topanga Canyon is where they expect the most damage to take place (which is a shame, as it's one of the nicest places in SoCal).

12. Fortunately
This fire won't hit the community of Topanga Canyon unless there is a dramatic and unexpected change of weather and wind direction.

19. My sister lives in Thousand Oaks and she feels a lot safer now...
... than on Thursday night last week. For a while, right across the 101 freeway from where she lived they were under mandatory evacuation orders and she was under voluntary evacuation orders. I think now that area looks to be a lot more under control. Still don't want to get too complacent until the fire is completely out, but it looks a lot better in that area.

11. I know Topanga quite well
Actually I'm there now. The confusion is that there is Topanga Canyon, the actual place, and Topanga Canyon Blvd., which starts at the ocean, goes through Topanga Canyon, and then through the San Fernando Valley to Chatsworth. The fire started at the far end of Topanga Canyon Blvd, and was called the Topanga Fire because it started near the street, not the actual canyon community.

Unless the winds whip up again, there is no danger of fire to the community of Topanga Canyon for the Topanga Fire. Even the way that it was burning was well to the west of us, so had the fire continued it likely would have gone down Malibu Canyon to Malibu and by passed Topanga Canyon.

The winds have stopped, we have coastal moist air, so I'm sleeping soundly tonight.

15. Yes. The fire is near the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library though.

But I expect that will be defended to the death of the last
firefighter.

14. Topanga Canyon
The fire is not in Topanga Canyon. Topanga Canyon begins at Mulholland Rd. and runs 10 miles south down to the PCH. Topanga Blvd runs north up to the 118 in Granada Hills. That is where the fire is. To get an idea of what it used to be like up there before the developers got to it, a lot of real old westerns, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, Tom Mix, were filmed up there. Still fairly open and beautiful when I was there, mid 80's, early 90's.

16. Chatsworth is in the West San Fernando Valley.
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 08:35 PM by Nikki Stone 1
Topanga Canyon runs from the west SF valley to the Pacific Ocean. Topanga Canyon Boulevard is further north, not too far from Northridge.

Closer to me are the Burbank fires. Anyone in that area?

20. The Topanga fire was dubbed so by the Fire media ,
As in "Take the 118 to the Topanga Canyon Blvd exit "
I'm still sleep deprived from that thing; missed three nights last week.
