January 18, 2006--Democrat Mike Beebe is maintaining a narrow lead, 46% to 40%, over Republican Asa Hutchinson in the race to succeed Governor Mike Huckabee. At present, Beebe and Hutchinson are the candidates most likely to square off in November.
Governor Huckabee, also a Republican, is prevented by term limits from seeking re-election.
Huckabee is a popular executive, but voters may be ready to flip his seat to a Democrat. In 1998 many supported both the Republican governor and the Democratic candidate for Senator, Blanche Lambert Lincoln. She was then handily reelected.
Asa Hutchinson is viewed favorably by 53% of likely voters. Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe is viewed favorably by 55%. More... http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/January%202006/Arkansas%20Governor%20January%2015.htm
