from an e-mail I got today:
There are about 25 old palm trees along Main St. on the south side of
the street between Alma School and Sycamore.(just east of Dobson.) They are dropping dates all over the sidewalk and landscaped area. They are absolutely
delicious and there for the taking. No one will stop you- they're
making a mess and are going to waste. They do need to be washed to
take out the dirt, rocks and pits. They are ripe when they are brown and a little soft like a carmel texture. They look Kinda like raisins. There are
2 varieties- the red and the yellow. They are both good- the red are
more sweet. The smooth hard brightly colored ones aren't ripe yet.
Really sqishy applesauce textured ones are not good sometimes and might
have bugs in them. The landscapers on Friday cut them all down from the trees in front of the school. There's a zillion ripe and not yet ripe ones there. They are perfect and not broken or even really dirty. They will last probably 5 days before they dry out and are not good. Come and get them before they waste. You could even bag up the unripe ones and let them sit out in your own backyard to ripen. They are SO good. They are my kids favorite snack now. And totally free! dates encyclopedia info-
