Moore Is Running!
"Ten Commandments judge" Roy Moore announces candidacy for AL governor

The man who lost his job as Alabama chief justice in a Ten Commandments controversy is running for governor.

Roy Moore became a hero to the Christian right when he refused to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the courthouse.

He announced today that he'll run for governor next year.

That could set up a showdown with fellow Republican Bob Riley, the incumbent governor. And it could make the Ten Commandments dispute a central campaign issue.

Two Democrats, Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley and former Governor Don Siegelman, are already running.

2. Like a bad penny, this guy keeps turning up.
If he breaks more laws, perhaps Bush will award him a Medal of Freedom as well.

6. I think that it could,
but then Alabama might just declare that this is really the thirteenth century and start burning us all at the stake. At this point nothing would surprise me...

8. I hate it for Alabama, but I'd love for Moore to be the "face" of Repubs..
everywhere. That would be wonderful. Plus, Mississippi would no longer have the worst governor in the country!

Seriously, do you think Baxley can put Siegelman away pretty easily or will it be a major fight? I'd really like a fresh face, because Siegelman seemed tp piss off many Alabama Democrats during his one term.

9. IMO, if Moore wins the primary against Riley, then Baxley has an easier
campaign.

10. I think you are right
At least I hope so.

But I wouldn't necessarily count Siegleman out yet.

11. No she doesn't
There seems to be a lot of delusional thinking going on about Moore and how Alabama voters will reject him as too extreme.

This guy won more than 800,000 votes in a statewide election. Whenever he speaks he packs the house. He is treated like a rock star on the evangelical right.

The country club Republicans are shitting their pants right now because they hate Moore, but those aren't the people who will elect Moore. It's the Wal-Mart Republicans who will put him in office -- and that's a whole lot of people.

Bob Riley hasn't even announced yet whether he'll run. Moore is going to outraise him. Moore will have the Christian Coalition and an army of evangelical brownshirts ready to lay down on the tracks for him. Riley doesn't have that and all the I Love Lucy bumperstickers in the world won't be enough to stop it.

At this point, the only person who can defeat Moore is Moore. He's liable to say or do something very stupid. We can only hope.

12. If Moore is that strong, then Riley should concede now. If Riley runs
then Moore is not as strong as you suggest.

13. Moore is pretty strong.
A January poll of university students in Mobile showed Moore running 8 points ahead in a hypothetical race with Riley. Whether he can actually beat Riley is unknown, but he's certainly a very real threat.

He's not quite a shoo-in, but he's for real.

16. "January poll of university students in Mobile" is not a true sample of
Alabama voters.
