Groups file lawsuit against WH for 'fishy' emails they are collecting..
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 03:33 PM by joeycola
I was surprised to see this. I see nothing wrong in forwarding the emails

http://www.aapsonline.org/aaps-eop-complaint.pdf

According to the AAPS/CURE Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief filed by their lawyers, the organizations seek the following relief:

(a) Declare that the First Amendment and the Privacy Act prohibit and preempt the Defendants’ efforts to collect and maintain information on protected speech;
(b) Enjoin the Defendants’ continued collection of such information via the [email protected] email address and the linked “reality check” internet reporting form (collectively, hereinafter “[email protected]”); (c) Order the Defendants to expunge all prohibited information obtained via [email protected] from their records; and
(d) Order the Defendants to remove the solicitation for citizens to report on others’ “fishy speech” from whitehouse.gov and enjoin their soliciting or collecting information (including email addresses) on third parties’ political speech.

Edit to add. I found this news article also just now:

Obama Administration Sued Over Healthcare Enemies List
August 27, 2009 10:49 AM ET | Peter Roff | Permanent Link | Print

By Peter Roff, Thomas Jefferson Street blog

A doctors' group and an organization that advocates for the interest of the inner-city poor have joined forced to sue the Obama administration, charging that its abortive effort to collect criticisms made by those opposed to President Obama's plan to change the U.S. health care system infringed on their First Amendment rights.

In a complaint filed Thursday in U.S. District Court, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and the Coalition for Urban Renewal and Education said the White House had attempted to "unlawfully" collect information on protected political speech when it asked Obamacare supporters to report any negative comments about the proposal to a U.S. government
email address, [email protected].

4. The emails that are being sent there are forwarded emails.
When you forward an email to someone, you never know who gets it and who they send it on to.

5. As long as IT is tracing these emails
I've got no problem with it. I do hope they had enough sense not to get any FBI or CIA type tracing on it.

It would be nice to know where these emails are starting and put an end to them though. I am so sick of it.

13. I was surprized to see that the lawsuit had been filed. Nothing more
was intended than to let others now. I also added an Edit to the OP.

19. CURE is a Rightwing nutjob organization.
From Wiki:

"The Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education or CURE is a right-wing organization founded by Star Parker in 1995 to "jump start national dialogue on issues of race and poverty," according to their web site. It focuses on personal freedom and personal responsibility as solutions to poverty, rather than welfare dependence. It is a social policy think tank that looks at issues of race and poverty and tries to come up with alternative answers to the "welfare state" that are faith based and market based.

They work with inner city pastors and legislators to "dismantle all the social engineering of the sixties so people can live free," according to CURE's founder, Star Parker."

20. And so is AAPS
"AAPS is generally recognized as politically conservative,<4><5><6> though it describes itself as "non-partisan".<7> The organization opposes mandatory vaccination,<8> universal health care<9> and government intervention in healthcare.<10> The AAPS has characterized the effects of the Social Security Act of 1965, which established Medicare and Medicaid, as "evil" and "immoral",<11> and encouraged member physicians to refuse to accept or participate in Medicare and Medicaid.<12><13> AAPS argues that individuals have a right to purchase medical care, that there is no right to medical care, and that a government-mandated entitlement to medical care is unconstitutional and immoral; hence they oppose efforts to implement a national health plan.<14> The organization also opposes mandated evidence-based medicine and practice guidelines, criticizing them as a usurpation of physician autonomy and a fascist merger of state and corporate power where the biggest stakeholder is the pharmaceutical industry.<15> Other procedures that AAPS opposes include abortion<16> and over-the-counter access to emergency contraception.<17>"
