(President Obama) accused Republicans of “fear mongering” and said they might win some short-term political gains by “scaring the bejesus out of people” by warning of huge energy cost increases.....

1. That picture must be faked, since the President gave up smoking a while back.

27. Ah, I think I read someplace that the President still has a smoke
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 07:13 AM by a kennedy
once in awhile......I'll try to find where I read that. edit: here's something about it.....
Barack Obama admits he still smokes

By Paul Thompson in Miami

Despite signing the toughest anti-tobacco bill in over 25 years, he confirmed that he still lights up – but never in front of daughters Malia and Sasha.

"There are times where I mess up," Mr Obama said at a White House news conference. "As a former smoker I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No. I don't do it in front of my kids. I don't do it in front of my family," he said.

"I would say that I am 95 per cent cured."

Mr Obama had been urged to quit smoking by his wife Michelle during his 2008 election campaign.

But the pressure of battling Republican presidential candidate John McCain meant that under pressure he succumbed.

He did switch to nicotine patches in an attempt to wean himself of the habit he started when he was a teenager.

Mr Obama refused to say how many cigarettes he smokes or how often he lights up in the White House.

25. No doubt learned it from his grandparents, the way I learned it from my mom and dad...
Except mom pronounced it bejayzus and it wasn't until I was grown up that I saw it in writing as bejesus and realized it was a reference to JC.

And if you haven't heard that song yet ("There's No One as Irish as Barack Obama") it's rofl funny.

33. Ok.
We’re stuck on a roundabout, asteroid2003QQ47, I’m getting dizzy! And if we crash in to each other anymore we’ll both be write-offs. Maybe we should just agree to differ, move on, even click ‘ignore’??

But you asked me to try and understand your motive for posting that photo, so here goes.

You went to a RW hate site, found a photoshopped picture of Michelle Obama which merged her image with a monkey, then posted it on DU. You justified doing so because (let me click my booksmarks) “it's a sample of what worshipping politicians breeds…..the rabid obeisance lowbrow liberals display is responsible in a large part for generating such garbage”.

By all means, pummel those who you regard as cheerleaders (I’m ready, I have my gumshield in), regard their ‘worshipping’ as dangerous, equate their ‘idiocy’ with right-wing ‘lowbrows’, etc – all perfectly viable arguments (even if I disagree with you on the hero-worshipping thing).

Where you completely lost me was that suggestion that the ‘hero-worshipping’ of the Obamas has somehow provoked this RW racist backlash – are you saying that if there was no “rabid obeisance” by “lowbrow liberals” that Freepers, etc would have restricted themselves to objecting to Obama’s policies, and paid no heed to the colour of his skin or his background?

Absolutely, the RWers have been enraged by what they view as the mindless hero worship of Obama, and that has raised their levels of hate and bitterness a notch or ten. But we both know what the chief source of that hate is – and it’s not Obama’s fondness for Dijon mustard.

Come on asteroid2003QQ47, the motivation for merging Michelle Obama’s image with a monkey is clear enough, we know what that’s all about, there’s no mystery. And however much you loathe what you view as cheerleading you surely cannot claim it is what creates and drives that level of hatred and prejudice? It might intensify it, but it’s not responsible for it.

No problem, I don't think you were ever an admirer of Obama – you said you’d hold your nose when you voted for him – and that’s fine, but just be honest about your motivations in all these arguments. I understand why you despise the ‘adulation’, but don’t use it to explain away the vitriol.

As for the hero-worship thing, I like this quote, I think it applies to most of the DUers you attack:

“Hero-worship in the sense of expressing our unbound admiration is one thing. To obey the hero is a totally different kind of worship. There is nothing wrong in the former while the latter is no doubt a most pernicious thing. The former is man's respect for which is noble and of which the great men are only an embodiment. The latter is the serf's fealty to his lord. The former is consistent with respect, but the latter is a sign of debasement. The former does not take away one's intelligence to think and independence to act. The latter makes one perfect fool. The former involves no disaster to the state. The latter is a source of positive danger to it.”

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (Indian philosopher, activist and chief architect of the Indian constitution.)

No, no, I’m not calling Obama “noble” – I just think it’s possible to admire someone without losing all your critical faculties when they screw up.

Flame war over, I think we've run out of terms of abuse to shower each other with. :-) Please asteroid2003QQ47, put me on ignore, avoid the photo threads (and any other stuff I post), it'll make your experience on DU much more pleasurable! Take care.
