Why the Emails Are Important
Edited on Thu Jun-25-09 10:19 AM by dave29
I agree with the sentiment many have expressed regarding the Sanford emails. They are intensely personal, and on the surface do not appear to have any bearing on the matter as it stands. However, there are other reasons these emails should be made public that are completely unrelated to their tabloid value.

There are issues of public safety.

Sanford could have very easily fallen in with someone who could have taken advantage of his position of power. If this person, or persons associated with her was/were an enemy of the United States, he could very easily have put himself, his family, or the country in jeopardy. These emails could shed light on whether or not he was so blinded by his love for Maria that he shared things with her that could have put any of the above in jeopardy.

Unfortunately being in a position of power does put one in a position of much greater responsibility and vigilance. There is a reason for all of the security we provide to our politicians. It's not just to protect them and their families. It is ultimately to protect our interests as well.

1. I guess you could have a point, but what you say here could easily have been applied to Clinton. n/t

2. "Position of power"?
Sorry, I always thought he was pretty much a drip, long before this crap came to light. Now I know he's a drip, a jerk and a bad liar

But I'm not sure what vital secrets he had to share with him "Bimbo du Jour" or pretty much anyone else.

Aside from being able to get good Tee Times at Myrtle Beach or better seats for a NASCAR race, what real "power" does the Governor of South Carolina have?

I mean it's not like he has access to the South Carolina National Guard launch codes.

3. he was a previous sitting senator, and head of the Governors association
he could have talked about where he was going to be and when, etc. Anyone wanting to harm him or his family could have found this information useful, especially if he was known to like to ditch his security detail.

5. Ditching the security detail was a big tip off
although I am amazed that a govenor needs a security detail 24/7 anyway. I guess that's a sign of the times we live in now, huh?

6. Blackmail potential
Had the affair remained out of the public eye it could have been used to blackmail him into doing, well, stuff.

Wouldn't be the first time.
