So my Republican friend told me...
President Obama told everyone in his speech that he wanted this to be a Muslim Nation.

Grasping any?

1. Not listening to the speech
and merely repeating a talking point.

2. Did your friend even hear the speech? I didn't,
yet, but I just bet that's not what he said.

Does your friend listen to any r/w sources?

And added. Because you sure didn't hear that from Obama's lips.

18. exactly right

Whenever I hear somebody say something stupid like that I simply ask "who told you that?".

They become immediately defensive. If they don't name a source then you can simply state "I don't think you actually heard his speech because that is not what he said." If they name a source then s simple "so you are still listening to him?" does the trick.

5. It is astounding how even intelligent ones parrot the talking points back.
This guy is actually one of the most brilliant friends I have.

Yet he is as stupid as they come when it comes to politics.

It baffles me!

6. Have you told him this about himself?
Sometimes giving someone the highest compliment to make your point about their worst flaws works. If he really is brilliant he'll think about what you meant.

25. Should ask him who are his US Represenative and Senators.
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 11:39 AM by LiberalFighter
Then ask if he knows who are his State Senator and State Representative. And keep going on down the line.

And then you could even possibly check to see if he is even registered to vote and if he did vote depending on the state you live in.

Connecticut can only be done online for Vernon and Southington Counties provided you know their DOB.

Or if you have a friendly Democratic County Chair they could check him out for you.

7. Then he's just not that smart, if that's what he's doing.
Maybe you need to needle him, let him know that his parroting of the talking points lowers his IQ, or at least people's perception of him. No independent thought there? Sounds problematic.

10. Muslim nation - good thing or bad thing?
Let's see.

My wife in a burka - not good.

No more bacon - Definitely bad.

Have to get rid of my dogs - Very bad.

Praying five times a day - not good.

72 virgins - definitely promising but I don't think I'd want to do what I'd have to do to get them.

I guess I'd have to say that it wouldn't be a good thing for me.

I prefer it remain as it is - no state sponsored religion. Hear that, jeezus freaks?

13. Why do you waste your time with a repuke? There are normal people out there
who would benefit from your friendship and you would not be contaminated by their shit.

I just don't get so-called Dems who continue friendships of any kind with cretins who belong to the party of racists, corporatists, and killers.

19. There are good people who just feel differently about life.
I may not agree with their politics but it doesn't take them off my friend list.

You may work that way but I'd loose too many friends that way.

Life isn't black and white.

Besides who is going to educate them if we don't talk?

28. First - they are uneducatable. Second - how can you blithely go along with "friends" who
support torture, racism and other bigotry, environmental destruction at the altar of corporate greed, etc.?

It's like Jews being "friends" with nazis. How is that even possible unless you really do not object to those views?

30. Because it isn't the same thing.
Your analogy is a bit far fetched.

According to you all Republicans are no worse than Hitler.

As a Jew I find that remarkably stupid, insensitive and way off base.

37. No, you missed that. All repukes are "not as bad as Hitler." The analogy was Jews being
friends with any nazi, given what that philosophy led to.

Only some/many repukes are that bad, or would want to be if they had the power.

As someone who was raised in a Jewish family, I was repeatedly struck by the hypocrisy of my family and their friends who saw nothing wrong with being prejudiced against others (ever hear one of your relatives use the word "schvartza" when talking about black people?). They also railed against the restricted country clubs that would not let them join but then turn around and trash the "goyim."

But, to focus back on the original point - how and why would someone continue a friendship with someone who supports viewpoints that are antithetical to their own philosophy? Masochism? A self-destructive turn-the-other-cheek mindset? If they are not warped or suicidal, I have to conclude that they (you?) just do not really care about the issues on which you disagree. I guess that is the fair and balanced approach. Not bright, but self-indulgent and ego-building in the sense that you think you are better because you are accepting of disgusting beliefs.

Sorry - but I just cannot stand to be around bigots and those who would destroy what freedom we still have in this country.

29. How "differently" does this "friend"
feel about torturing people. Raping people in a prison? Voting for dumbasses IS a major deal breaker for a lot of us.

Oh, and good luck with that education thing... If the last 8 years of stoopid didn't do the trick, you are wasting your time.

It just doesn't work with them. I'm glad you are able to remain friends with someone whose fundamental beliefs clash so thoroughly with your own. Not me! Life is short. I want friends who share my basic nature, not right-wing authoritarians whose politics I have to ignore.

To each his own!

In your original post, your friend sounds STUPID. I don't reflexively think someone is stupid because they are conservative or smart because they are liberal. Your friend just sounds like an idiot and a detriment to the intelligence of anyone they come in contact with.

40. I understand your position....
...I have a very dear Republican friend who has a box of rocks for brains when it comes to politics. However, her political views do not define the person that she is. She has the biggest, kindest heart of any person I have ever known and will give anyone the shirt off her back if they need help. True friends are very hard to come by....stick with your friend...he may never see the light of day when it comes to politics, but I am sure he has many qualities that you admire. Liberals and conservatives can be friends...some people are just not open-minded enough to see that.

38. On another site I like to check out for UFO stories,
someone had posted a speculation just before President Obama's speech in Cairo that it would be the one where he declared he really was Muslim - several additional posters speculated that he would also confess that he had been born in Kenya or Indonesia. After the speech, there was a thread dedicated to how he declared the US was a Muslim country, dedicated to Muslim ideals and purposes. Several fundamentalist Christians posted statements about how they had declared and dedicated the entire country to Christ and Obama was going against their deity. Finally a few cooler heads prevailed, posted actual quotes from the speech to show what had actually been said and the thread died.
