16 Senators sign onto Public option for health care reform...

I am pushing for single payer.

But there is support for the public option:(and opposition)

1. Single payer won't happen . . . at least not immediately.
As long as we can get a public option, we'll be on the way. People will sign up for it, be happy with it and slowly everyone will gravitate to it. (Except, of course, those who fear "socialism" and prefer to pay through the nose to guarantee the salaries of billionaire insurance CEOs.)

10. I agree absolutely. We have to press for single payer, but
the sad fact is it's highly unlikely we'll get it. Rather than be totally discouraged, we need to have a Plan B and that would be single payer via the public option.

14. Yes, we need a Plan B, but now is not the time to be advocating it
We do that only when we absolutely have to. A great deal of what is "possible" is determined by what we actually try to DO.

2. Good for them. Disappointed my senators did not sign (and that there are only 16 senators signing
out of 48).

4. Not signing does not mean they are against it
The letter is going to Kennedy, so I doubt he was even asked. Not signing or not sponsoring a bill does not mean they are not for it.

5. I know. I still would have liked Kerry to sign this letter. It is a strong sign of support.

I have no doubt they support it. Kennedy has offered bills for Medicare for all for many years now. However, showing support is also important, particularly when it comes to something as important as this. Nelson and others have said they did not want this to happen because it would hurt the private insurance companies. It is not a time to remain silent.

6. I quite agree - and I hope that more will sign (if that is even possible)
It might even be that they didn't have a chance to even meet with Kerry - who really seems to have been busy on SFRC stuff last week.

15. My new senator signed.
Jeff Merkley, who beat Gordon Smith last November.

I'll send him a note of thanks.
