6. 56-43 Obama
Still, let's not completely dismiss any impact Michael Steele might have. He won 25% of the black vote in Maryland when he ran for Senate in 2006. That may not seem like a lot but it's a scary number...in many states a Republican who wins 25% of the black vote would win in a landslide. I'm not too worried, because people don't vote based on the party chair, and we still have Obama and that's so much more valuable than Michael Steele. But the fact that the GOP at least recognizes that they need to try to be a little more diverse is a good thing for the country but kind of bad for us.

8. i agree.
I think that Steele could have a net positive impact on their strategy in congressional elections. He will try to make the RNC more inclusive. The thing is I think that the Repubs voted him in for all the wrong reasons, and the base will fight Steele's changes.

12. I get that and I agree but the RNC chair basically handles the money
having read "How to rig an election" by Allen Raymond I learned that Haley Barbour ( who comes off well, for a Republican, in the book) basically just exerts power with the purse.

Steele is basically a pundit now anyway so they may have him on the air more than others have (even Dean)...we'll see.

They HAVE to do something to cut into black and Latino numbers -not making a demographic the kissing cousins of terrorists would help but they, of course, went with perception over hard work or reality

And just as a former Hillary supporter I was very tempted to vote for McCain when he picked Palin as running mate. I almost did! I mean...it's the same thing, right?

16. I'm still
waiting for him to respond to why he said running as a Republican for Senator in Maryland would hurt him so he tried to trick low information voters into thinking he was a Democrat. Being from Maryland and following that race shows me that Republicans have really lost their way if they think this is the best man for the job.

24. That's what I am saying MajPayne2...
The Repugs are so stupid they think Black America is going to jump on the wagon because they have a black man in front of the camara.

Lookie Here, Lookie Here....we got us a black man!

Only problem is he is powerless. The puppet masters are pulling the strings. I think Steele is going to get a rude awakening.....

I bet the Repug party splits...just as they did back in the day. There are hardcore racists and they will not identify with Steele.

Welcome to DU!!:hi:

19. The only difference I see is that they probably won't pass out the Obama bucks in 2012
Other than that, the republicans need to get over thinking that identity politics won't work. They tried it with Palin and it didn't work.

I have heard some of his interviews and what comes out of his mouth is just like what comes out of every republican's mouth.

20. Oh, yeah -- this is gonna work

What's even more pathetic than this blatant attempt at copying a phenomenon is the stereotypical, formulaic and completely lacking in creativity interpretation of said phenomenon. The utter failure to get the point. Americans fell in love with Obama's IDEAS. The color of his skin was a bonus:-)

The cool thing is that this guy probably has his own clothes, so as frontmen go, he's a bargain.

28. They must think we're as stupid as they are
It's not the fact that they're a bunch of old white men with crappy ideas on how to govern. It's their crappy ideas are bad for us. Putting a black face on it doesn't change that.

Regards

36. What % of the public know who Steele is or that he is black
If this is an attempt to win over low information voters, you have to consider that low info voters won't follow this issue anyway. Something like 40% of the public couldn't recognize a photo of Dick Cheney back when he was VP, so chances are only a tiny minority of people will follow Steele or what he does (I'd be surprised if 15% of voters knew who he was and what he was just elected to). Low info voters won't even follow this info, so this pandering by picking a black guy to whitewash the fact that the GOPs base is made up of bigots won't work.

37. Two things:
First: Steele squeaked out a victory over a guy who had to quit an "whites only" club just last September so he run for the post.
Second: Steele is on recorded with the quote, "Bush is my home boy!"
I only wish I could think of something erudite to say about this perplexing situation.
