11. It was pointed out on CNN
From a viewers email that the democrats had Hillary, so the repubs went out and got Palin. We elected Obama not the repugs have elected the first AA as head of their party, they just can't seem to do anything but copy what the democrats have done!

36. Michael Steele is NOT racist.
His election is a great thing for the RNC. He was the only candidate to speak out about the Magic Negro song and he thinks the GOP has to be inclusive (ex. compromise about immigration) to bring minorities to the GOP. Freepers will hate this choice b/c they basically call him a RINO.

that sort of trash is what I associate with Michael Steele. The sort of shit that has come from a million and one Republic Party turds.

45. never heard him say that.
If he did then it sucks but it doesn't make him a racist. I have seen him in other situations before the election where he did not act like that. I've heard him speak in support of Affirmative Action. I can never understand why a black person can be a republican but among them, he is one of the better ones IMO. He is no Alan Keys or Clarence Thomas and he is probably the most moderate among the candidates.

50. Well, perhaps you are right.

I was only going by what I've seen, afterall - Not making a blanket statement with regards to Steele, but from what I had seen to that point the impression I received was that he kowtowed to the seamier, more provocative style of Republic politics. Still, I had probably seen an incomplete picture - With that in mind, racist was the wrong terminology so if I could edit my previous post, I would change that to "ideologically bankrupt" but I do detect the usual Republic Party smugness and disrespect for the average citizen.

That said, manipulating and attempting to use economically deprived black people like this make me believe that in most respects he must be a standard issue Republican:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/12/AR2006111201084.html

(sumary from wikipedia)

"The Washington Post reported that on election day the Steele campaign arranged for buses of low income people from Philadelphia to distribute fliers at polls. The flyers contained incorrect information, including a statement that Michael Steele was endorsed by prominent state Democrats and African American leaders who had not, in fact, endorsed him. The homeless people were falsely identified as volunteers although they were paid, and the campaign funds used for this purpose of hiring the homeless were not timely or properly reported or attributed to the campaign"

46. You can disagree with Steele politically without
calling him a racist. From everything I've ever read and seen about Steele, he is not a racist. Racism is a very serious charge, and I think people are throwing it around far too often.

They are perfectly happy with someone like Ken Blackwell (also black) to lead because he is a hawkish conservative. They think Steele is a RINO, or a moderate republican, which he basically is.

43. FR is already going nuts on his 2nd amendment and abortion stances.
Apparently he has indicated he supports an assault rifle ban and opposes overturning Roe v. Wade. The infighting took all of about 20 post to break out in full force.

I so rarely look over there, but I couldn't help myself today.

They also seem to be pleased with themselves that Steele is "more black" than Obama.

35. He's a moderate that might actually help them in the long run but...
but the rank and file conservatives might revolt. He nearly won the MD Senate in 2006 as a "non-Red" Republican. He desperately tried to appear to be a Democrat -- even his bumper stickers said "Steele Democrat" -- the campaign said it meant a "Democrat for Steele" but everyone knew what it really meant. He is potentially a good choice but it remains to be seen if he can unite the party.

49. anotherlame attempt from the GOP to "re-invent" itself
Not to begrudge his experience or value to his party, since I don't know him, but to me this seems very much like another one of the GOP's attempts to "re-invent" itself. But dress a a piece of crap up all you want, it's still a piece of crap. They insulted our intelligence by parading Palin around shouting "look we embrace women", this is just their latest hat trick so they can shout "look we embrace minorities too!"
I'm not fooled.
