What's with all the crying on DU lately?
It seems like almost every other thread has people crying at every event, speech, song, background music, photo, etc. Some people say they "can't stop crying." It seems like we're the "crying-est" political website out there.

Don't get me wrong. I get emotional at times myself and I don't want to hurt peoples' feelings here. I just feel we've exhausted the crying, weeping, bawling, choked up, misting over, descriptions of our behavior. Or maybe just over-emphasized it.

For myself, I am laughing for joy and I'm all for everyone doing it! I got up and danced during the concert yesterday. I was practically doing war whoops (but my husband would have surely come up to check on me!). If I thought I could sing, I'd be doing that!

So everyone, how about it? BIG GRINS and no more tears...

1. So we've advanced to ripping people for crying tears of joy
This place is becoming a total embarassment.

but I'm very satisfied seeing an intellectual back in the White House.

I'm laughing and dancing too.

After 8 years of Bushco hell, the emotions are so strong I can't help but cry.

16. Sure, I've had tears of joy, like on election night. Actually, they were tears of relief.
I was letting go of lots of built up tension, stress, anger and fear. It was necessary and it was good. We've had nearly 3 months to exhale, shake off our old abusive relationship with GWB and contemplate a new day coming.

That is why I am saying this crying jag is getting a little much. When I see Obama take his oath of office I am going to BEAM! I'm just too damn happy!

8. There are legit reasons these days for people to cry with joy
why discount that? Imagine being a black person who lived through the civil rights era in the 60s and remember the apartheid system we had in this country. I know you are not slamming those who say they are crying but you have to understand why so many may be doing so.

Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 02:01 PM by HughMoran
Just typing the subject line brought that welling up feeling inside me.

I'm overjoyed at the prospect of our first African American President. When I think of the blood, sweat and tears it took to get to this point, I often become overwhelmed with emotion.

I was wondering what the age of the OP is.

For those of us who grew up in the 60's this is a very emotional time in our history.

45. VERY emotional
I feel like a lifetime of emotion is being released at this time. It's hard for me to imagine that a younger person can't perceive the link to history that many of us feel at this time.

25.  I read this yesterday and it says it better than I ever could:
"When Barack Obama takes his oath as president on the same Bible Abraham Lincoln used to swear his oath,
people across the nation will shed tears to baptize a new era."

We are washing away the old with our tears and ushering in the new. Yes. We can.

28. Thankfully we aren't a nation of synchronized pod people
If people are happy and dance and laugh, great.

If people are happy and moved to tears because of the immense historical significance, great.

Why do all the admissions of emotion over this time bother you to the point you want to admonish people for not reacting the way you think they ought to?

I guess I'm not all that sensitive. I'm not weepy at all. I'm jubilant! All I want to do is dance and feel wonderful, with a sense of fulfillment.

I just couldn't get into the crying at every moment along the way...at some point it got to me...sorry...

43. found the answer
Poutrage = "pout" and "outrage", used to describe the overdramatic and insincere feelings of outrage towards a candidate over trivial reasons, usually because one's own candidate is going through a rough patch.

yeah, that's why i disappear for long stretches of time.... the drama can be too much.
