TX school district reverses decision about students watching inauguration
Kind of. Initially NONE of the kids would be allowed to watch it...parents protested and now kids in social studies/history classes will be allowed to watch. The rest of the student body won't be allowed to watch it.
IMHO, the kids who want to watch it and won't be in the "appoved" classes need to ask their parents to stay home..let the school district lose money over their decision (attendence is tied to their state funding---they get docked $ for each absent student).

Last week administrators in the Keller Independent School District decided that students there would not watch the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama.

After an outcry from parents and members of the community, the school district has partially reversed its decision. A receptionist at one Keller ISD school said she had "been overwhelmed with phone calls from parents angry about the decision."

(snip)

With the reversal, KISD students, curriculum Kindergarten through 12th grades, will be allowed to watch the inauguration if it occurs during their Social Studies or U.S. History class. The KISD website states, "Variances in viewings will be based on schedules, age appropriateness and technology."

(snip)

A Keller ISD spokesperson confirmed that all students were allowed to watch the 2005 presidential inauguration of George W. Bush. CBS 11 News was told that no policy existed in 2005 and that the school district was under a different administration at that time.

2. What would be interesting is to see what their policy was in 2000 and 2004
We need someone to do a little research.

3. Their policy in 2004 was to let all the kids watch
Per the article, they were allowed to watch chimpass' ceremony in Jan 2005. Nothing was said about 2000-2001 but in this case, it is probably safe to assume....

9. Thanks for responding
I didn't click on the article. It's sounds like they are being hyperpartisan about it. My guess is they were allowed to watch the 2000 ceremony as well.

Since they lose money on attendance, I'd love to see lots of people pull their kids out in protest. The only problem is, in the long run guess who it would hurt, yeah the kids.

4. They couldn't schedule the school to shut down for an hour
and watch it in their auditorium, gymnasium or other location on a big screen? Maybe they don't have that capability and not feasible for their school.

But it seems to me that many schools have video resources for their rooms with cable access.

I would want my child to watch history being made.

This day is more important.
