Obama receives rousing welcome in Hawaii

Obama receives rousing welcome in Hawaii

(Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Barack Obama received a rousing homecoming on Saturday when he and his family jetted to his birthplace of Hawaii for a 12-day vacation, his first visit since winning the U.S. presidential election in November.

Obama left behind Chicago’s slushy, snow-covered streets and semi-frozen Lake Michigan for the balmy tropical weather of Hawaii.

The president-elect was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Malia and Sasha. Aides say they will be joined later on the holiday by close Chicago friends Valerie Jarrett, Martin Nesbitt, Eric Whitaker and their families.

Obama last visited Hawaii in October, making a 23-hour stopover in the midst of the election campaign to see his ailing grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, 86, who did not live to see her grandson elected the United States’ first African American president. She died two days before the election.

Obama is due to attend a private memorial service for her sometime next week, an aide said.

2. You speak the TRUTH
Get some rest Obama family because we have a lot of work to do beginning in January!

Like I've said before, I truly do not envy Obama and the work he has to do to clean up the mess he's inheriting from Bush. He'll need a FLEET of Hoovers to clean up after that man.

8. Good point. Is Hawaii the new Crawford, or is Chicago?
I vote for Hawaii.

11. I know which location has the media vote. Bet he gets great coverage for 8 years there.
Mai tai hangovers preclude deep meaningful journalism. ;)

9. Yup. In fact if there was bias in Obama's direction, I would tag his
favorite vacation spot as the culprit.

After 8 years of sweltering in Crawford, life has sure turned around for the media.

12. It would be hard to focus on investigative reporting what with the beach and surfer boys/chicks.
The white house correspondents always knew their ambition would lead somewhere. I'm sure they can't believe their luck
that out of all the states, the 44th Prez comes from Hawaii.

13. Definitely... having known some SS, I'd bet they are checking out the chicks behind those shades.
Of course, they'd be scanning around Obama with every other blink... but the ones on perimeter patrol must be enjoying the break
from Chicago.
