I don't think DUers supporting the Warren choice are homophobes or those opposed are anti-Obama

I think anyone who suggests (1) that I must be opposed to Obama or that I'm being an extremist because I'm speaking out against Warren or (2) that people who stick up for Obama are putting into jeapardy our fights for abortion or civil rights... doesn't really have DU's or the Democratic Party's best interests at heart.

It's important that we argue about these things. It's also important that we don't let one fight turn us into buttheads. Obviously none of our current arguments is going to tear DU apart. Despite the heat and the hurt, this website will chug along well into the future. But it would be nice if those of us inclined to turn political arguments into personal attacks could take a step back before posting and remember that all of us here at DU are either Democrats or are pretending to be Democrats.

We're on the same team. Let's not break each other's legs during the scrimmage.

1. It's too late. The dismembered bodies are lying all over the field.

2. I don't either, because
Refusing to acknowledge how hateful Warren is, or how offensive it is to gay people that Obama would give him such prominence, does not necessarily make one a homophobe. Likewise, refusing to offer any more support of any kind to Obama until and unless he proves himself to actually be an advocate for gay rights does not necessarily mean that one is anti-Obama.

10. Well said. I think it's also safe to say that:
1) Rick Warren is a homophobic shitheal

2) President Obama will ultimately do the right thing and ensure Equal Rights for ALL Americans

18. I like your optimism
I think Obama will move the ball foreward on civil rights. I fear the road ahead for full equality under the law is still a long trek. How far down that road we get in the next four years depends a lot on our ability to bring more state governments into line with reason and civility. I don't think we'll advance civility very much with uncivil behavior. But I do think Obama will in the balance be a sometime ally--assuming there's enough smartly applied pressure on him from our side moving him in the right direction.

20. I'm keeping the faith...
I still think it's healthy, and I'm sure Obama does as well, to protest that which we do not favor.

3. The homophobia of the Obama apologists is now becoming obvious to see.
Too obvious to ignore as well.

16. This person has been posting more obnoxious bullshit over the last couple days than most.
Reminds me of Perry Logan. One or two lines of sniping and rudeness.

4. Thank you so much. I don't like Warren.
I'm willing to look at the issue from different angles. That doesn't mean I like Warren OR what he believes. That doesn't mean I am somehow anti civil rights for GLBTs. I want full civil rights immediately.

I listened to what Obama had to say. I see where he's coming from. I disagree with him. I'm not going to declare that somehow he's anti-gay because of it. He has a voting record that shows he is NOT anti-gay.

7. Actually, we're not on the same team. Some DUers are putting up anti Democratic Party web sites
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 12:48 PM by HamdenRice
which means that officially, you're not on the same team with them.

I understand your sentiment, but I don't think you may be aware of how destructive some of the anti-Obama sentiment is becoming to the new administration and the party.

12. You're right. It's becoming destructive to DU, too.
I'm trying VERY hard to hang in here. But posts like one of them above make it very difficult.

and by not addressing it rightly that is the result.

11. Stupidity
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 12:48 PM by Jake3463
The reaction to what started out intially as concern and some anger at a stupid decision by some people has caused this to get worse.

Telling someone to stop it or shut up is almost a guarentee they are going to get angrier and louder.

Obama made an insanely stupid decision. He'll probably make a few more as President being human. Not being able to say that was stupid of him by some on here or trying to potray it as brilliant has caused it to get bigger.
