American People overwhelmingly approve of Obama's pick of Hillary as SoS

The poll indicates that 71 percent approve of Obama picking Sen. Hillary Clinton for secretary of state. Democrats overwhelmingly approve of the choice, with two-thirds of independents agreeing and Republicans evenly split on the pick.

Clinton and Obama were rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination during the very long and bitter primary season, and the two didn't see eye-to-eye on some major international issues.

...

But the poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday, suggests that Americans don't think Clinton will go rogue when she and Obama disagree.

...

Holland adds that the "favorable ratings for both Clintons have risen dramatically since the election

2. Polls don't mean much.
Laura Bush Approval Ratings Among Best for First Ladies

PRINCETON, NJ -- While her husband George W. Bush struggles to improve his low job approval ratings, Laura Bush remains a very popular first lady. Her current job approval ratings are among the most positive ratings Gallup has recorded for a first lady. But her high level of popularity may not translate into political support should she seek public office. Most Americans say they would not like to see her run for the U.S. Senate.

A Jan. 20-22 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds 82% of Americans approving and just 13% disapproving of the job Laura Bush is doing as first lady. Last year, she had a similar 85% rating, and she had a solid 74% rating in July 2003 when she was first rated.

Gallup has asked the public to evaluate most of the first ladies at least one time during their tenures in the White House. In general, Americans give positive marks to first ladies, but Laura Bush's scores are among the best Gallup has measured.

For example, Hillary Rodham Clinton averaged a 64% approval rating while she was first lady, ranging from a low of 54% in January 1995, to a high of 80% in February 1999.

Laura Bush's Approval rating August 2008: 62%

Hillary's approval rating: September 2008: 51%

3. How are the approval ratings for a first lady and a senator
related in 2008? What are Laura's approval ratings compared the other senators? A ridiculous comparison.

8. Now, now, the Gallup poll is comparing approval ratings of First Ladies.

Certainly you can see that? Also, the relevance of the other two polls goes to why I don't trust polls.

10. But the portion you highlighted does not...
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 06:29 PM by S_E_Fudd
Laura Bush's Approval rating August 2008: 62%

Hillary's approval rating: September 2008: 51%

Laura Bush is currently first Lady...Hillary is not...

Polls are accurate when they are taken...they are not predictive...

As of right now, as I stated, Obama's choice of Hillary as SoS is overwhelmingly approved of by the American people...

11. Being a little selective aren't you? How about the portion I'm referring to:

12. That has nothing to do with anything...
I don't even understand why you think it is relevant...

You did seem to think it was relevant to highlight Laura Bush's (semi) current rating to Hillary's from September....

You do understand what a poll shows right? It is a pretty accurate snapshot of current opinion. Since this CNN poll was just released today I would say it shows exactly what I said it shows...Hillary's selection by Barack Obama is overwhelmingly popular with the American people

Wouldn't you?

4. You are comparing a first lady who is virtually never heard from...
To an active politician and Presidential candidate...interesting...to put it into perspective...if I had been polled on Laura Bush I would have said I approved too...and I hate W as much as anyone here...

Perhaps you should have said "out of date polls don't mean much"

5. That's because people seem to prefer the Stepford First Ladies
over the activist ones like Hillary. Eleanor Roosevelt also had many detractors in her time. I think it has to do with a remaining vestige of sexism. I remember during the campaign some people saying that a woman shouldn't be president, that it was a man's job and that no woman could be believable as Commander in Chief. Whatever else may have come out of this election, one good thing is that there's no doubt anymore that a woman can't be tough and have the "cojones" to handle the job.

17. The whole primary season smelled of sexism.
I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with Hillary on policy, that is valid. But, most of the crap thrown at her in the media and on many blogs was a) personal attacks and b) outrage because she wouldn't just disappear and make room for Obama. Imagine if it had been the other way around. Would the media have been clamoring for Obama to quit the race? I sincerely doubt it.

25. some yes, but Hillary lost because her campaign sucked
and her history was not a kind friend to her
and her friends were not kind to agree with what she thought was her history
and she did and said some really idiotic things.
and Obama is the man for the times

16. No, even then they don't mean much.
Remember the PA polls leading up to the election, the ones that showed Obama and McCain tied? Obama won PA by 11 points.

I suspect polls would show most Americans overwhelming approve of any SoS Obama selected from his short list.

More Americans approve of Gates staying on as SoD.

18. Yes, and then I remembered how the margin grew to about 6 points by election day
and the remaining 4 points in her 10 point margin came from the undecideds.

Nice try though. :)
