I was threatened to have the police called on me this morning!
Bullwinkle and I arrived for our poll greeting shift in Irving, Texas on this the last day of early voting. A long line of people were waiting to vote. A Dallas County elections clerk was segregating people in two lines - one with voter registration cards and one without - and allowed the former group to cut ahead of the others and vote first. He was telling people they had to have both their registration cards AND their driver's license. In Texas you only need the voter registration card, but if you don't have it with you and know you're on the voter rolls you can show your driver's license or other acceptable form of ID.

I put on a neutral t-shirt so as not to be accused of electioneering and confronted the guy while another poll greeter went in to get the election judge. The guy was extremely snarky to me and said he'd "explain things to me simply so I could understand them," to which I replied, "Yes, I'm an attorney and have NO brains!" The election judge came out and told him to cease and desist, but when she went inside he started doing it again. We called Dallas County elections and the Dallas County Democratic Party, and finally the jerk was sent away. Apparently the elections office has hired new IT clerks and the guy misunderstood what he was supposed to do.

An elderly man serving as a pollworker got in my face and accused me of impeding the progress of the vote. I told him I had no visible campaign gear on and was within my rights as a voter protection attorney to question the practices of the other clerk. He threatened to call the police, and I said politely but firmly, "You do what you need to do."

The line went much faster after the idiot left, and I was not arrested!

I can't wait to see what happens on Tuesday. :patriot:

The police and firefighters are extreme right wing supporters. What is ironic is that they have the strongest unions and in some cases have gotten away with actual murder. Most of the professional firefighters where I live have two jobs. The get to count 24 hour shifts in which the playbasket ball and lift weights as work. A guy that I grew up with retired as a captain and he had in his entire career fought five minor house fires. Have firefighter risked their life, absolutely, but not the average joe in a modern city.

12. A million points of light!
This campaign is a thing of beauty. It is a model for every campaign, in every election, in every jurisdiction in the future.

1) Pick a message and stay on it.
2) Build or graft yourself onto (Dean's) a grass-roots network.
3) Involve your network -- let them know what's going on week by week.
4) Fund yourself with 4 million small donors.
5) Activate your campaign with 1 million volunteers.
6) Train and support your volunteers.
7) CHANGE AMERICA!

13. Ha! I was told I was having the cops called on me for helping a homeless woman by a nutbag RW nut
so I found your title funny. I ignored the lady and kept helping the lady, several months ago, and that homeless lady is no longer homeless! So, I commend you on standing up against the moron element in society who think threatening the cops or browbeating us with stupid-talk is enough to make us stop doing what is right.

GOOD ON YOU! :)

37. Until we spend as much energy on having these things over-
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 03:41 PM by truedelphi
Seen by activists and attorneys like this one, as we spend on the phone banks for Obama etc, we will keep facing this problem.

This is one area where not enough energy is going.

18. Boy have we come a long way.
At least I have. I watched every single moment of 2000, and it all went right over my head. And I think much of the nation had no idea what/who we were up against. I had always assumed we were all pulling together. Some of us weird (Republicans), and some of us normal. I was wrong.

It has all culminated to the awareness we now have. We aren't ready yet, because we're still letting them play by their rules. But thanks to people like you, we're catching some of it.

This election is more than just about a president. It's about the election process. It's about getting a Congress that also has our interest.

Good for you. Thanks for upholding the Constitution.

38. My thread about what we need to do after the election to ensure
that future elections are fair and transparent sank like a rock. It is what I fear. Yes, we will probably win this time, but I am quite sure we will win by much less than we would have won in a fair election, and that our majorities in the House and Senate will be smaller than they would have been if all our votes had been counted and many not suppressed.

But since we will probably win, too mny people will think the problem is solved. It won't be solved until we pressure our representatives to give us a voting system that is fair and transparent, rather than one that would embarrass a banana republic!

And what directions was he given that he "misunderstood" and by whom?

Thank you so very much for what you are doing!
