I was a volunteer for Election Protection in Miami. I was stationed at a school with a direct line of sight to Dolphin Stadium. Polls opened at around 7. There was at least an hour wait right from the start. There was nothing we could do about it. It was what it was.
I realized then that it was no accident. Florida was designed so pro-democratic voters would have to wait (and sweat) it out while republicans up north could vote within minutes. Population wasn't the issue. The issue was not enough polling centers and not enough machines.
One of the hardest and most disheartening things I saw was people leaving when they saw the line or realized how long it would take. People had jobs, families, and lives to deal with. Taking 1-2+ hours to vote wasn't possible.
I think the voters of FL, as well as the Obama campaign are aware of this. That's a big reason why people are voting early. They know that if they take a day off, they can spend as much time as they need, instead of possibly not voting at all. And as we know, if everyone votes, Obama probably wins.
