It's been doing the rounds of the more desperate RW blogs in the past week or so - someone looked up some long words about persuasion and hypnosis, and decided they can be applied to anyone who can make a good speech (you know, 'atriculate' or 'eloquent', as McCain repeatedly called Obama). Inevitably, it's got on to the desperate RW attack shows too.

Technically, a great number of public speakers use what could erroneously be called hypnosis. Barack often uses a stylistic nuance called the "preacher roll". He builds, and builds, and then gives you the "punchline" - followed by another drop. It's very engaging, and usually only used by Black Baptist preachers - MLK used it effectively, for example.

What they do on RW radio and Fox can also falsely be called "hypnosis" they use fear, give a scapegoat to blame for your fear, incite hate of the scapegoat, and then give instructions. It's an authoritarian and incendiary style - employed by Hitler.

Both methods are known semi-scientific methods of oratory for capturing the hearts and minds of an audience.

This election has been the most interesting (unintentional) experiment in collective behavior I've ever seen. Usually hate and fear win, they're the more visceral feelings to human beings. This time hope and optimism are winning. It's a beautiful thing, like watching human evolution in real time. Brings a tear of joy to the eye on a regular basis. O8)
