Anchorage Daily News Endorses Barack Obama For President
http://www.adn.com/opinion/story/567867.html

Obama for president

Alaska enters its 50th-anniversary year in the glow of an improbable and highly memorable event: the nomination of Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate. For the first time ever, an Alaskan is making a serious bid for national office, and in doing so she brings broad attention and recognition not only to herself, but also to the state she leads.

Alaska's founders were optimistic people, but even the most farsighted might have been stretched to imagine this scenario. No matter the outcome in November, this election will mark a signal moment in the history of the 49th state. Many Alaskans are proud to see their governor, and their state, so prominent on the national stage.

Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency -- but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.

2. I am SO PLEASED they did this.

They've been pretty tough on the governor, so I'm not surprised, but I'm sure they were under a lot of pressure, and the Palinistas will be screaming. This is great news, though.

ed. After reading it all the way through -- DAMN, DAILY NEWS, THAT WAS GREAT!

in the face of a lot of opposition. Palin's supporters are loud and relentless.

14. This is awsome!
Funny the Anchorage Daily will endorse him...
but my local daily rag still endorses McCain, even though he is trying to rape Colorado on it's water. Which if funny because the http://www.pueblochieftain.com is always railing against water encroachment around these part. The Chieftain is a RW rag.

I'm sure they want to keep some channels open with the guv rather than totally dissing her (even though they might want to). It makes sense for them to concentrate on the match-up between Obama and McCain, and we can deal with Sarah later. After all, she will "be in the limelight." Maybe not quite in the way she wants to be, though.

26. Oh, I love it when you grin that way.
Did you see the New Yorker article about her courting the conservative, Washington elite and media in the governor's mansion?
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/27/081027fa_fact_mayer

Did your tax dollars go to her introduction to that society, her campaigning for something grander? Did you ever think she saw the office as merely a stepping stone to higher office?

And then there is this from the AP about her curtailing the bids for the gas pipeline.

I hope that the time comes soon when no lipstick can help the fraud.

I've enjoyed reading their website the last few months. It provides some hope that not all Alaskans are, well, like Palin. ;)

33. This was probably the best endorsement I've read this election season.
It was reasoned, eloquent, and focused on the reasons why their editorial board (and the rest of Alaska) should vote for Obama.

It was a very persuasive piece, IMO, for any undecideds without a hint of partisan politics.

34. And Obama's Alaska offices are calling swing states...doin their part!
This is from newsminer.com today....

A spokesman for the Obama-Biden campaign said they are operating phone banks as well as sending postcards to undecided voters in the Lower 48. Volunteers in Alaska have written about 90,000 postcards, and spokesman Nathan Osburn said they hope to reach 100,000 by Tuesday.

“We are pushing heavily with calls to swing states,” Osburn said. “We are still doing outreach to Alaskans.”
