Now That We're Nearing The End: Your Top 10 Moments Of This Election Season?
This has been a crazy-ass election year. Really there have been too many moments to remember, but these are possibly my top 10.

10. The whitest man in America, Mitt Romney, courting the "urban" vote by singing "Who Let The Dogs Out." Hilarious!

9. The recent news of this pyscho, carving a B into her face and claiming a big scary black Obama supporter did it. Tragic.

8. Rudy Guiliani and the Florida plan. If you hadn't known better you'd of thought he was running for governor, he was in that state so long. The single worst political strategy of our times.

7. Bobble head Ted Strickland looking like a tool while Hillary was going off on Obama. I lost a lot of respect for him after that. Not that I had a whole terrible lot for him before that anyway.

6. Bosnia sniper fire. I don't want to open old wounds, so I won't dog on Hillary, but she earned a few pinnochios for this one.

5. Lazy Fred Thompson's statement that it's not good when a presidential candidate shows he wants it too badly. I thought this was great. I think he only held one rally during the entire South Carolina primary. Haha.

4. Hillary's rally in the rain before the Pennsylvania(?) primary. She looked so tough in that black jacket with rain pouring down on her. I remember thinking "Damn, she's kind of a badass."

3. Obama surviving Super Tuesday. I thought he was a goner for sure, and couldn't believe he made it past that. After that day, I knew he had a real chance at winning it.

2. Obama's "More Perfect Union" speech. It was such a brilliant moment, and he spoke to us as if we were adults, something politicians never do. Years from now that speech will be remembered as one of the most revered in our country's history. In my opinion...

1. I'm going to wait until Novemeber 4th for this spot (fingers crossed).

What's your top 10? I know I forgot a ton of stuff.

1. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. #10 is one I will never get over.
Talk about a jackass.

I am very forgiving of HIllary's sniper fire story. I never thought that was a big deal. I'd strike that one off the list.

#2 was truly brilliant.

2. Do you want some local top tens?
All of us local activists have good stories, especially those of us who live in red areas.

Here are my local top three:

3. In my county, we doubled the number of people who pulled Democratic ballots in the February primary, as compared to 2004. Twice as many people voted for Obama and other Democrats this time.

2. When my husband and I placed Obama signs in people's yards, we had a request from a retired teacher who is in her eighties. She is a sweet old lady who used to teach in a country school. She lives on a prominent road with a good spot for a sign. She was at a doctor's appointment when we placed the sign, but we placed it anyway. My husband went back to check on her after noticing that the sign was missing. He found her placing the sign as close to the road as possible. The guy who mows for her hid it somewhere, and she wasn't about to stand for it. This lady can barely get around.

1. I walk in all the local parades for the Democrats. I was walking with my husband and carrying our banner in my home town. We were near the very start of the parade route, where there were few people. The bands hadn't starting playing yet, and all we could hear was the sound of our own feet. A man and his small son were standing on the curb, very close to me. He said to his boy, "Look, son...Democrats. That's what WE are." The pride is back. People are passing it along to their children.

Maybe this is not as exciting as some of the national stories, but I love my local Democrats. We are making a difference.

4. "That One"
Plus,I love # 2! It was the most thrilling and meaningful for me. It's just so wonderful to actually have someone you're totally proud of to vote for, someone that knows how to be eloquent and calm and collected.

7. Good question.
There are several. I can't sort them out into a tiered list, but they would include:

--Obama's surge to victory in Missouri's vote count AFTER the Associated press had called that state's primary for Clinton;

--Joe Biden's terrific devastation of Rudy Giuliani's candidacy as comprising "a noun, a verb, and 911";

--the long trail of wildly talented musicians for Democratic candidates (The Boss, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Elton John, James Taylor, loads of others...);

--Obama's capacity-plus crowd at Kohl Arena a week or so before the Wisconsin Primary on a winter night that was PLENTY cold;

--Obama's address on race in Philadelphia;

--Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg's poise and dignity in her roles for the Obama campaign;

--columns by Bob Herbert and Frank Rich, and Rachel Maddow's radio programs;

and

--the sheer fun of following events on DU with such a rowdy, unpredictable, very brainy and lots of fun folks.

9. Here's a few of mine...
1. Sarah Palin's wince-and-vomit inducing 'Say it ain't so, Joe' at the VP debate. At this point, she jumps the shark.

2. Tina Fey.

3. Obama's acceptance speech at the DNC. One of the best in the history of the Dem party.

4. "ZERO?" at the third presidential debate.

5. Sharing this wild ride with you guys. Just thinking back to the start, and the long battles where we were tearing each other apart here. And then the PUMA implosion and the unification of DUer's behind Obama. It's been fun. :)

10. My PERSONAL campaign moments...
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 09:24 PM by brooklynite
February 2007 - I go to see Barack Obama speak at an early NYC fundraiser. I come away thinking: "a superb orator, but not much of a message..."

June 2007 - For the first time in my life, I see a political candidate (John Edwards) actually drink an alcoholic beverage (White Wine) in public

September 2007 - In Iowa, waiting for all the candidates to speak at the Harkin Steak-Fry, Hilary Clinton's campaign shows its organization by using the middle of the night to plant 500 campaign posters and flags along the main street in Ames, Iowa.

November 2007 - I meet Hilary Clinton at a private fundraiser, and mention that we had met five years earlier. She remembers the details...scary.

January 2008 - Bill Clinton throws me for a loop at a New Hampshire rally by starting EARLY

January 2008 - My wife and I fly to Nevada to help the Clinton Campaign with the first Nevada Caucus, and are told, "we're short on volunteers, so YOU'RE in charge of a precinct..."
June 2008 - I'm at a private fundraiser and get to hear Barack Obama's first words after Hilary Clinton drops out

13. too many to count
but I've been most moved by the people I've met while volunteering. I've registered people to vote in a red state, who have not EVER voted before...or last voted for Kennedy.

I've heard some great stories from these people, I've been hugged and reassured that he will win. It felt sometimes like we were at least beginning to heal some old wounds in the south in terms of racial division.

I worked with my mom in another state for Obama. It was great to get out of a red state for a few days and experience a state that has recently gone Obama:-) (a thanks to Mr Scorpio for his props the other day -- it is hard in a red state!) And my mom and I will always have the memory of working together on this historic campaign.

My favorite memory of him was his rally in Germany -- watching all of those people waving our flag with honor brought tears to my eyes. He can do that for this country. Oh, and the DNC. Ted and Bill and Hill -- everyone was GREAT-- but those three are seared into the memory bank.

I've never been this proud to vote for someone.

14. Senator Obama's speech on race. It was historic, and deeply moving.
I felt that we had just witnessed a very evolved man who was pulling all of us forward. I will never forget that moment. It touched me deeply. I felt honored to be a part of this moment in time, to hear this "great man" give an incredibly powerful speech to raise consciousness. I thought to myself, this is a very special man, one that we may not ever see the likes of again in our lifetime.
