Zogby: “The AP poll is not only an outlier, it’s just preposterous!”
Pollster says AP’s numbers don’t add up
Joe Dwinell By Joe Dwinell

The gloves are off - between the pollsters not the candidates - as polling guru John Zogby ripped an Associated Press survey showing the McCain-Obama battle down to a dead heat.

“The AP poll is not only an outlier, it’s just preposterous!” Zogby told the Herald last night.

An “outlier” is a term for a result on the margin that is often thrown out by statisticians.

snip//

The numbers:

# The AP-Gfk poll shows McCain gaining among white voters and those earning less than $50,000 a year, with the GOP nominee hitting paydirt with his “Joe the Plumber” tax talk.

# A George Washington University Battleground Poll also has the two locked in a tight race with Obama at 49 percent to McCain’s 47 percent.

# The Zogby poll, a three-day rolling average of 1,208 likely voters surveyed nationwide, has Obama gaining ground day by day. “These numbers, if they hold, are blowout numbers,” Zogby said.

# Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Obama up by 9 percentage points, while a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll had the margin at 11 points in the Democrat’s favor.

2. The Gallup guy was pretty dismissive also.
Schuster asked him about it and he said: "We didn't do it, so I can't explain it."

6. The AP poll is just a cover story for the REAL story
Voters will have their ballots tallied on machines that hack the vote.

At least 80% of all ballots will be tallied that way.

Think your absentee ballot on paper means something? Not at all - not if in the end it is tallied on Diebold OptiScan, like so many are.

The Repugs need a cover story in use for several weeks so that when the election night vote total allows McCain that "slim" margin he has been talking about, they can back up that victory

Doesn't matter if it preposterous or not. Just having the cover story is what is needed.

Was 7Pm Pacific time, the night of 2004 election. Went into Appleby's for dinner - husband said, "Look everyone knows it!"

I said, "It will be stolen"

Husband said, "Now how would they do that with the exit polls exactly the way that it would be beyond statistical belief for it to be stolen."

I put on happy face. Went back into County Building to oversee the local counting of votes. Obama won by 72% and change,so I continued the celebration When we left at 11:50 Pm the car radio told us that Bush was the declared winner.

I won't believe it till I see Obama live and well on January 20th. And please - nobody let him visit Dallas!!

8. He's pissed that it's more outrageous than his polls usually are.
They all of a sudden got the attention he usually gets for having an outlier poll.

12. ya, it's funny for HIM to be criticizing a poll...
but then again, he's desperate to caste himself as a fair, objective pollster even among republicans.

14. Someone made the point that the AP poll is a one-off, that they don't poll constantly the way others
do. So that sort of reassures me that the AP just doesn't know what it's doing.

16. And the AP is extremely biased; the head of the DC bureau, Ron
Fournier, almost joined the McBush campaign.
