Senator McCain:
Usually, when millions of your opponent's supporters, such as I, are yelling, screaming, and begging you to stop a campaign strategy, it's partially because we fear its effectiveness. This is not the case with your latest tactics. Mainstream America fears angry mobs and their instigators far more than someone who has a bunch of rumors floating around him. Your latest poll numbers reflect this. Normally, when a politician I oppose vows to continue tactics which destroy their election prospects, my response is, "by all means continue". This time I cannot, in good conscience, say that.
This is an historic moment in our country. We have an opportunity to unite as a nation with a vision for the future that will lead us through the hard challenges we now face, to come together as we began to in the wake of 9/11/01, before that unity and brotherhood born of tragedy was squandered by Bush's own hate-filled rhetoric and catastrophic actions.
I do not fear your victory. I fear my American brothers and sisters becoming victims of the blind, ignorant hatred you and your running mate have inflamed. If this nation once again turns away from the light of hope and compassion to fall into a morass of fear, bigotry and violence, it will break the heart of America.
And you will have to answer for it.
