Call your Senator now! Especially the Republicans.
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 12:50 PM by Pacifist Patriot
I just got off the phone with Bill Nelson's office and I'm about to call Mel Martinez. Of course they are unable to comment on campaign issues but I highly encourage everyone to let your Senator know that at the very least colleague censure should be swift and immediate. It is absolutely beyond the pale for a Senator running for office to dehumanize his opponent inciting hate and violence against him.

Obviously congress is not in session but that doesn't mean something cannot be said publicly.

ETA: Just got off the phone with Martinez' office. They were MUCH more responsive than Nelson's office. The staffer himself said McCain's behavior was unacceptable and he would absolutely forward my message to Martinez immediately. Republicans will be extremely sensitive when you let them know this is spilling over and damaging their credibility as politicians as well.

ETA Again: Here's what I said to Martinez's staffer.

Hi, my name is ________. I am a constituent in _____________. I realize the Senate is not in session and the Senator is not able to comment on presidential campaign issues. I am simply calling to share my concerns so you can pass them along to the Senator. I am extremely worried about the increasingly negative tone of Senator McCain, Senator Martinez's colleague in both the Senate and the Republican party. McCain's rallies have now become about dehumanizing his opponent and inciting hate and potential violence. I am alarmed that we are now hearing "kill him!" coming from McCain's crowds. To equate one of his colleagues with the likes of Osama Bin Laden is not just dirty politics it is beyond the pale and incredibly dangerous. I urge the Senator to do what he can to illiminate such reckless, irresponsible and disrespectful behavior from his colleague. McCain's campaign tactics at this point have crossed the line of human decency and are a disgrace to the Senate and the Republican party."

1. I would call Hagel, but I suspect he's said all he's going to say about this election.
Nelson is too busy currying favor with the GOPers in this state to ever say a bad word about McStupid or his campaign--they like him, he's not about to alienate them. Plus, he's never exactly been a guiding light of principles and political courage.

2. True, but when you tell them that McCain's hate speech is spilling over and damaging...
their party and their personal credibility they might surprise you and sit up and listen. I was stunned when I got off the phone with Martinez' (R) office. They were far and away more responsive than Nelson's (D).

4. You are probably right about both of them. Fellow Nebraskan here.
Were are you? I wonder if it could be your dog that barks at me on my walks. :-)

19. Probably not your dog. I walk by a house with two dachshunds.
They bark at me like crazy. I have two big dogs that hardly ever bark so the little barkers make me laugh.
It is always nice to know of another dem in my neck of the woods.

9. I've got even a better two to contact.
They are Durbin and Obama. I think they are also very aware of the situation and in agreement with it.

I'll save my dime.

13. If I were in Arizona I'd have long ago gotten a form letter...
"Dear Constituent:

I am well aware I do not remotely represent your interests in any way or fashion. So don't bother contacting me again in the future. Carry on."

Which is essentially what I once received from Rep. Pinhead, my GOP U.S. Rep.

20. I guess I put this in the wrong thread...
Did the same today...

I just called my congressman, Brian Bilbray, and had all of my employees, some of whom are even R's but equally sickened by all of this, do the same. Obviously I didn't get him on the phone, but got to someone who seemed to have some pull in his campaign, telling him that if he wants to earn any votes next month, he'd better show that he's willing to lead on this and speak out against it. If he doesn't, then the same guilt-by-association that's being used by the 'top of his party' will be used against him, and people will think he's the same sort of fundie bigot that the rest of the R's are becoming. I heard nothing but silence on the other end of the phone for a few seconds, a 'thank you for calling' and then a 'promise' to speak to the congressman about it.

Will this do any good? Probably not. But if enough people make those calls, especially to H of R members running for reelection, we could get some people to speak out against this, if for no other reason than to distance themselves from the bastard child of the Nazis and KKK that this party has become.
