I don't normally ask that kind of question but Michelle seemed to be properly and warmly meeting and greeting. But Cindy didn't even seem to be shaking hands, at least when they panned around to her. Maybe she's worried about losing her $280,000 earrings? :P

8. Only because Obama made the first move.
After that, she sort of slunk around behind the old guy in a subservient manner. No, she didn't demean herself by actually shaking the hands of commoners.

smiling and giving a little wave now and again and I swear she cringed when McCain did his "public hug".

What a contrast to Michelle and Barack.

I mean, does she come to every speech and every event to just stand there? I never seem to see him speaking without at least one of his "beauty queens" on hand.

she came out from behind the curtain and stood there, when McCain didn't seem to see her, she called out "John!" and, still unacknoweldged, just kinda slinked in behind him, seeming not to know what to do.

48. The hypocrisy is really astounding
During the debate McCain looked straight at the audience and called them "my friends" 20 times.
The minute the debate ended the McCain's left, not shaking hands with their "friends".
The Obamas stayed for 30 minutes, taking pictures with audience members, signing autographs and shaking hands.

Apparently, the audience members were only McCain's "friends" when the network cameras were on.
Once the major networks switched back to their studios, John and Cindy ran out of there.
They are utter phonies.

10. Some say it's because her wrist was injured but I said bullshit
She had one wrist in the sling - she could have used the other one - she could have just held their hand and talk to them. She didn't even have to shake their hand but just get closer to these people and talk to him.

Cindy looked like she was disgusted with the debate, with this election and most importantly with her husband. If she wants her husband to win, really wants him to win, screw the injury and shake the damn hands. The cameras are running and you look like a stiff, cold-hearted c*nt that you are.

I think she even had her hands behind her back. I guess she was trying to look casual, but it looked like she didn't want to touch anyone. She seemed very cold. On the other hand ... Michelle was warm and vibrant, as usual! :D She walked right up to people, shook their hands, talked ... she seemed so comfortable and completely at ease.

On edit: Am I wrong or was Michelle sitting in the crowd during the debate while Cindy was behind the curtain (backstage)?

56. Cindy has issues - I think she's a hypochondriac
probably OCD, too, in addition to the drug problems. She leads a lonely life, since Gramps is in D.C. all week. He's probably hell to live with and she breathes a sigh of relief when he's gone. She's done all sorts of things without even asking him, like adopting a baby and taking flying lessons and buying an airplane.

30. She seemed particularly today. I don't always feel chilled by candidate spouses...
for instance, I never felt that way about Laura. I would never vote on the "who I'd rather eat dinner with" factor like some in the country apparently do, but I really have the feeling Cindy wouldn't condescend to have dinner with me or respect me at all. I agree with some that she should've toned down the designer stuff as well since most Americans wouldn't wear such pricey attire or jewelry and might be put off by that when they can hardly pay the bills or get gas!

36. Her mind is distracted by how much money she has lost in the last two days
and is about to lose by Friday. There isn't a whole brain between her and John put together. People in her income bracket aren't investing in things that are even remotely safe to fund their extravagent lifestyle.

Nope, the McCains are likely hip deep in those unregulated playboy pocketbook hedge funds. I'll bet you part of their $$ are frozen somewhere for the long term, and others have taken dives that are simply horrific.

Cindy may be realizing that not only is John losing the election, she is on the verge of completely losing her fortune. And after last night's performance, I'll bet too that she no longer wishes to continue putting anymore of her dwindling fortune into the "John for President" investment.

I can see with her substance abuse history where something as intense as this campaign could again send her for her "mother's little helpers." I hope she is still sober...but watching her? I have my doubts. There is IMO something definitely wrong about her demeanor.

50. She behaves like an abused spouse.
She's always walking a little behind John, but close. She nods and smiles a lot. But when her husband has a bad day or night, she knows the signs that he is mad, and someone is going to catch hell. For the abused spouse, that means "you're IT tonight!" Not a happy thought.

Grumpy knew he got his ass kicked. He was bound to be in a mood, because he really needed to turn it around.

53. I wonder whether the after-effects of her stroke changed her ability to 'connect' with folks.
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 11:17 AM by gauguin57
I can't help but wonder about that ... forgive me, I'm a liberal (and we think about stuff like that ... you know, people's health and welfare and so on) ... I don't really remember how she was at political events in 2000, before her stroke.

Now, don't get me wrong. I cannot STAND her or her husband. But I do wonder whether her hanging back all the time has something to do with the damage she suffered with her 2004 stroke -- which was apparently a pretty bad one. She may not feel confident that she can pull details together quickly enough to talk to people who might ask about issues and so forth.

I read this in a 2007 interview about her stroke damage:

"In conversation, she will occasionally have trouble remembering certain facts, especially from the recent past, and if you look closely you realize she cannot make her right hand into a complete fist, which has affected her handwriting, if not her ability to grasp a gearshift knob. "It's not bad," she says, describing the damage to her hand. "I can function. I have short-term memory loss. I can remember all the major details of my life, but I sometimes can't remember what happened last week."
