McCain facing the 'crisis of his career,' Gingrich says

Gingrich says McCain should come out against the bailout.

(CNN) — John McCain faces the "crisis of his career," says former House Speak Newt Gingrich, who predicted the Republican nominee will lose the election unless he makes a public break from the economic bailout proposal.

In a column posted on the Web site of the conservative Human Events Tuesday, Gingrich says it is impossible for McCain to catch up in the national or state polls unless he taps into the anger many Americans feel toward the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street investment banks.

"If Senator McCain is not prepared to separate himself from the Bush-Paulson economic program, he has no opportunity to win," Gingrich writes. "The country is deeply fed up with the Bush presidency and angry about the Paulson bailout. If McCain is confused or uncertain about how bad this economic performance is, he will never get the country to listen to him."

Gingrich is the latest prominent conservative to criticize McCain for supporting the bill, which Congress passed last week. Speaking on CNN last week, radio host Glenn Beck said the Arizona senator will lose the election over the vote: I think he lost the election — there was a moment here for somebody here to rise up as a leader," Beck said.

1. I would love it! it would show again how erratic he is. Now he is against the bailout he
voted for. He would lose any credibility he still might have left.

5. But . . . but . . . but that would make him (gasp!) a flip-flopper like John Kerry!
And McCain just criticized harshly Obama yesterday for waiting a week to get support for the bailout instead of McCain dropping everything to get it passed.

Love this!

6. If McCain runs ads saying that he was forced to vote for the bailout...
...because of the bad things Democrats have done, then Obama can run ads saying that he was forced to vote for the bailout because of the bad things which Republicans have done.

The SEC chair appointed by Bush who was in power in 2004 changed the leverage rules to allow the 5 biggest investment banks to take on greater risk.

8. "Gingrich Switches Bailout Stance" (September 29, 2008)
===========================
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/gingrich-now-ba.html

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich reversed course on Monday, issuing a statement saying that if he were still in office he would "reluctantly and sadly" support the $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill.

Gingrich, who led the charge against the bailout last week, explained his change in position by saying that the House Republicans, "reinforced by John McCain," have improved the bill "significantly" so it is "less bad" than the original proposal offered by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
