GOP dread: Dems could hit 60 Senate seats
The possibility that Democrats will build a muscular, 60-seat Senate majority is looking increasing plausible, with new polls showing a powerful surge for the party’s candidates in Minnesota, Kentucky and other states.

A poll out Friday shows Sen. Norm Coleman could now easily lose his Minnesota seat to comedian-turned-candidate Al Franken. A Colorado race that initially looked like a nail-biter has now broken decisively for the Democrats. A top official in the McCain camp told us Sen. Elizabeth Dole is virtually certain to lose in conservative North Carolina.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has seen his race tighten dangerously close over the past week — and Democrats are considering moving more money into the state very soon. And there is even talk that Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss is beatable in conservative Georgia after backing the economic bailout package opposed by many voters.

“Before the economic crisis, we had a number of races moving our way,” said Matthew Miller, communications director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “But now we’re seeing Republican numbers plummet.” GOP officials largely agree.

1. That fucking Chambliss only "won" through vote counting fraud last time...
Does Georgia have the same "vote" "counting" machines in place this go-round?

3. Unfortunately, yes.
It'd be a great benefit to humankind if the entire lot of those pieces of shit were turned into very expensive bricks. I love computers. I've made good money doing computer work the last twenty-odd years. But I hate, hate, HATE those voting machines.

2. Good. Now we don't just have to kick Lieberman out
But we can tar and feather him and ride him out on a rail over to the republican side.

4. I don't see why McCain's peopel think Dole is finish in NC
I don't see why republicans think NC's senate race is a lost cause already. The only polls I've seen putting us ahead there are by no more then 5%, and often with a very large number (often close to 20% of people undecided.

6. And let's talk about what it takes for a governing majority
Even if we have 60 (counting Lieberman?) there are always a few who stray, so a very well organized opposition could block things in the Senate.

But there comes a point where the GOP would have to ask why they are doing that. I believe President Obama will be able to really lead this country and sell the public on the changes he wants to make. If he does that, he can make the GOP pay a big price for obstruction.

That's the stick. There are also loads of carrots. We don't have to cut the GOP out of the process. Every GOP Senator is going to want the Congress to pass programs that benefit their states. With a majority of 55ish in the Senate (not counting Lieberman), and a very big majority in the House, we would be a very good position to drive the major legislation through. The Senate GOP could dig in their heels on SCOTUS nominations, but again, I believe President Obama will choose highly qualified people whom the American public will find very acceptable. So the GOP will sabotage this at their own peril.

9. Coleman completely shot himself in the foot with his barrage of attacks on Al's personality.
Al IS a personality. Everyone knows that. Coleman should have (although I'm glad he didn't) done test market studies with his ads before placing them, but his camp is too cock-sure of themselves.
