Mich. Republicans surprised by McCain pullout
Mich. Republicans surprised by McCain pullout

LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Republicans were surprised Thursday by GOP presidential candidate John McCain's decision to stop competing for the state's 17 electoral votes.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, hoped it wasn't true. He said Republicans would still work to get out the party's message.

"John McCain is our candidate. We want him in Michigan. We want him to hear our issues. We want him to be here because we think he helps us across the board," Bishop said.

But Greg Strimple, senior adviser to the McCain-Palin campaign, said it no longer made sense to compete in Michigan.

"It's been the worst state of all the states that are in play," he said Thursday during a conference call with reporters. "It's an obvious one to come off the list."

1. It always feels bad when McCain pulls out. Sorry, but he's met a younger state.
Denial.

7. The rightists say it's good thing because he's gonna target MAINE!
Maybe he'll win 1 EV since Maine splits its EVs by congressional district. My how people twist their thinking when they get into bunker mode.

8. He is going after *maybe* ONE vote in Maine
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=7285691&mesg_id=7285691

ST. LOUIS — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) now must win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin or Minnesota in order to get enough electoral votes to win the presidency, his campaign says.

Maine is not a winner-take-all state (the only other one that splits its electoral vote is Nebraska). And McCain aides, perhaps optimistically, are suggesting he can win one electoral vote by picking up one of the Pine Tree State’s two congressional districts.

The Maine congressional district McCain is eying is the larger, northern one, the 2nd District, which covers most of the state and is held by Democratic Rep. Michael H. Michaud.

McCain has very limited ways to win, with no room for error. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) still has many routes to the White House and so can afford to campaign on a much broader playing field.

starting yesterday, 1st an Obama ad of hope, then a McCain negative ad of attack, then an Obama ad of hope, then a McCain negative ad of attack.

He's using old footage of Biden from the primaries and claiming Obama doesn't support the troops. :puke:

14. This Michigan thing makes no sense.
MI seemed to be their best shot at turning a big blue red. Especially considering he just spent 2 days in Iowa which is a lost cause. They must have some internal numbers in MI that look realy bad or they are scheming or they are just simply stupid.
