In the Palin/McCain Co-Interview Do-Over with Couric, Palin calls a PA voter a "constituent"
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 01:41 AM by VolcanoJen
There's a part of the interview that just really sticks out for me:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/">John and Sarah No Fred and Ginger - TPM

It's in the second half, right after McCain says that it's OK for Palin to speak for herself. :eyes: Palin refers to the voter who posed the Pakistan question as "a voter, a constituent" and then proceeds to diminish him; she speaks of him condescendingly with a wave of a hand as though the opinion of a voter is irrelevant.

And, of course, she calls him a constituent. Now, I don't know who he is or where he's from, but the event took place in a Philly bar so I think it's fair to assume he's not one of her constituents from Alaska. He's a potential constituent if she gets elected as VP, but in his role in that event he is a national voter whose vote she is seeking.. She mocks his voice, and says "he was yellin' across the room, 'what're you gonna do about Pakistan, what about Pakistan?'"

She's actually blaming the voter instead of owning her answer to him, which was, if you've seen that video, rather determined and boisterous at the time.

Forget about the word-parsing, even, and think about the way she just kind of blows him off after she's busted taking the common-sense Obama position. This should say all we need to know about the way Sarah Palin feels about people who expose her. You know, even if they're not members of the "gotcha media."

As an aside, can you imagine had Barack picked Hillary as his running mate, saying something along the lines of "but I'll let her speak for herself"?? Look, McCain, even if she's going to fuck this all up, go off-message and let us know who she really is and how she really feels about us, you should nonetheless let her speak for herself.

I've really reached a point where I feel, quite strongly, that John McCain wants to be President so bad it should be alarming to people.

1. McCain's defense was, "She was talking to a young man!"
WTH is that supposed to mean?

Do they have an entire human brain between the two of them? I mean, really?

3. And McCain claiming it was a "gotcha" question
(why do repugs feel that ANY question is a "gotcha" question?), that she was just having a conversation with a young man, that Palin didn't hear the question correctly, which is obvious bullshit-and why the hell did he have to answer for her? Why was he playing her "protector", couldn't she answer the question herself? Is he going to stand next to her at the debate, to field all the potential "gotcha" questions?

5. I expect the whole debate will be one gotcha question after another.
I can tell you how much I appreciate 'conversing' with intelligent, right-minded people. Thank GOD for DU!

24. Why can't she just admit that she made a mistake?
Everyone in America knows she's extremely prone to mistakes. If she just said that she was new to the Washington game and needed to catch up on the details, I think it would go a lot better for her. If they let her be herself, she would probably be more relaxed in her interviews and might not have sentences that never seem to end and that take sudden 90 degree angle turns. But it seems that McCain cannot allow even a small chink in his armor. I think the McCain campaign is handling Palin very badly and it's good for Democrats that they are.

4. John McCain is CRAZY, folks. he really has become unhinged w/pressure
I mean....he goes out at the first of last week's horrible credit/financial sector performance and says "fundamentals of economy are strong". He then gets bitch slapped by reality as the markets plunge and investment banks start to go under. He then spends rest of the week over compensating.

After the huge crescendo of media attention and support Obama got during Dem convention, McCain CLEARLY calls an audible and goes after Sarah Palin cuz she's "Cute and outside of Washington". Apparently not a lot of due diligence went into that search. Not only does she have a biography and family riddled with scandals, she then opened her mouth to say something other than what is on a teleprompter.

McCain has to blow off Letterman to record an interview with Couric to undo the damage his "AWESOME" VP candidate did. That's always a smart move. Piss of Letterman. He then says he should get some credit for today's plan up for vote....only to find out it fails most especially due to REPUBLICANS not supporting it.

Yep, Johnny not having such a great second half of September. Meanwhile, Obama is listening to some music, quietly smiling as John McCain does his work for him.

7. Steady as she goes
Obama's camp is just unflappable. It's exactly what drove the Clinton camp so nuts about them, really, when you think about it. But on a much more innocent scale, whereas McCain's people are just lurching wildly. It's the worst-run GOP presidential campaign of my lifetime, that's for sure.

6. Do-over interview... bwahhh hahh hahh
Tee hee... I saw some clips, and their "do-over" message essentially amounts to... well, I'm not saying anything... I'm just saying... and what I say really isn't what I mean, unless it's what you want to hear...

10. No. She's just that bad
If she were a man and that bad he would have done the same. Clearly she is so bad she requires a handler. Had he done this and it was not required, then yes, I think it could be considered sexist because there would be no actual legitimate reason to do it. She's just THAT bad... man or woman, it makes no difference. She is just so horrible on her own that she can't be trusted on her own. The fact that McCain is a man and much older as well just makes it look that much worse... like daddy trying to come to the rescue of his high school daughter in the principal's office. That doesn't show sexism it shows that Palin requires parenting.

And Americans should be alarmed at McCain's desperation and lust for power, frankly.

15. so many strange parts of that interview.
When Palin was speaking, McCain smirked, and then looked into the camera and then down, and then back up as if he was going to speak, but changed his mind. And when he said "Was that a pizza place?" and Palin shook her head, looked off to the side and mouthed "pizza place". What the hell?

17. Was it a pizza place?
I missed Palin doing that, gotta watch that again! And, was it a pizza place, or was that the Irish Pub she spent time at the night of the debate? I can't keep my Palin appearances in Philly straight, I guess.

How utterly dismissive, though, of McCain and Palin to refer to a voter as a "gotcha" journalist and then for her to openly deride and mock the voter just because she fucked up the answer.

18. haha, you need to watch it again!
See Palin mouth "pizza place", it's hilarious! I don't know if she's doing it to make it seem like McCain is such a joker, or as if to say "a pizza place? I'm not going to answer a random pizza person's question!"

20. Minor correction: She said he was "hollerin'".
In the interest of complete accuracy.
;-)
Couric: It wasn't a "gotcha." She was talking to a voter.

McCain: No, she was in a conversation with a group of people and talking back and forth. And … I'll let Gov. Palin speak for herself.

Palin: Well, it … in fact, you're absolutely right on. In the context, this was a voter, a constituent, hollering out a question from across an area asking, "What are you gonna do about Pakistan? You better have an answer to Pakistan." I said we're gonna do what we have to do to protect the United States of America.

21. the fact that she implies the voter said "You better have an answer to Pakistan!"
(not that it even WOULD be an unreasonable thing for a voter to say), as if the voter was trying to "trick" her, is so amazing.

23. Message: "We Hate Voters, and also The People."
McCain/Palin make Bush/Cheney seem almost reasonable. It's as if McCain/Palin are trying to tell us, "How the fuck dare you stand in the way of our march to the White House?"

People should truly be far more alarmed than they are.
