I'm calling bullsh*t on Kissinger's explanation and McCain's judgment. Nixon's visit to China did not bring about a change in Beijing's attitude toward Taiwan (Republic of China). To this day, Beijing stages military exercises to pressure the island into reintegrating. Indeed, Nixon's visit to China started a process by which Beijing, not Taipei, was catered to by the global community, much to the detriment of Taiwan's security.
