Somewhere along the line, McCain lost his objectivity about Obama. What you see on his face is genuine repressed contempt. I suspect he feels that he is owed the presidency and resents how easily it looks like Obama is going to take it from him.

McCain put a lot of effort into dismissing/belittling Obama. I assume he was trying to convince his audience that Obama is so inconsequential as a candidate/rival, that he was not worth his paying attention to him. Not looking over at him goes hand in hand with that.

I also wonder if it was 'technique' (or would that be a stratagem?) to avoid McCain blowing up at him. I don't know what their previous relationship was like, but given McCain's personality, he's got to be royally pissed off at Obama at this point, for trying to take 'his' prize. I would also think that the debate skipping debacle probably ratcheted that up; whatever McCain was trying to accomplish, blew back at him. (Talk about who is the better strategist!) Given the various reports of his blow-ups in the Senate, his thin skin has to be a concern for his handlers.

If it was actually primarily racially motivated, I don't think he would have been so blatant about it, unless he's a raving Klukker by night.

I'm actually leaning towards door number 2.
