I came to DU on the same day that Patrick Fitzgerald was assigned to the Plame scandal. My goal was to post for a while, and then communicate some of the issues involved in the Plame case. I expected to be here until July 14, 2004.

I have come to find DU the most interesting and valuable internet site. I could easily list 100 people here who I have great respect for. This includes several people who I often disagree with, and rarely speak to. Thus, I'll just say that I think highly of all those who are sincere participants in the ongoing discussions and debates on this forum.

I would like to focus on our fellow DUers: BigBearJohn and Iwfern

BigBearJohn.
Early on when I was under a thousand posts I learned to click on his threads. They graced the Greatest Page now and then and his were the OPs that held my attention. His journal's first entry is typical of things he would post here. Please note a willingness to reach out to our counterparts in the republican party, that is a rare trait and one I fully am in agreement with: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/BigBearJohn I found this from him from back in '06-please note his responses throughout the thread, #8 being noteworthy because again he reaches out to folks: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3002759#top

During the O/C-wars, he and I were on opposite sides of the fence. I was actually sad about this, his pain and anger were evident. He fought hard for his candidate, stood his ground well. When it looked like the wars were coming to a close, I thought we would lose him, THAT NOTION BOTHERED ME! I believe I may have let him know about that-that his words would be missed, but he hung in there. Then he accepted defeat with an open mindedness that was quite impressive actually-he chose to explore the good side of Senator Obama! I still remember his announcement to support Obama 100% he added the things he liked about the Senator and how lucky we were to have him as our nominee. (I wish I could locate it in my endless lists of bookmarks-it was a worthy read especially taken in context of the time and what we had just been through here in the DU. All things considered I really thought his transition was cool!) DU dodged a bullet when BigBearJohn chose to stick around.


Iwfern: I'll be sexist for a moment, the name once conjured up in my mind: a young lass, the kind that needs protecting from the big bad world. HAH! Nothing could be further from the truth! I have only had one encounter with this DUer that I can recall BUT what an encounter. I was busy saying glowing things about Larry Flynt, (I even had a Larry Flynt quote in my sig-line back then) and then Iwfern jumped in and flamed on my parade. She got slammed by others right off the bat for her comments and I was willing to let her have it too but luckily I entered into a debate with her. The debate may have gone on for 4 days-neither of us were willing to give up. Our posts are a bit below halfway in this thread:

In a sense, we were BOTH right but what stands out for me is that when it was over my life was changed somewhat. I dropped the Larry Flynt quote in my sig-line directly after our debate but more importantly I see all women differently now. No BS-I truly TRULY do see women differently now and I think this is a great thing! It was this very debate which did this to me! If I never post another thing in DU I will take away from here my gratitude for what she did to my worldview. Ranks right up there for me along with the day I was first taught how evolution worked!

Recently I was walking my fave dog with a lady-friend and she made a sexist joke about blond women. Prior to the debate with Iwfern I would have found the joke uproariously funny but no longer. This time it was my turn to have a discussion about the promulgation of sexism in our culture and how it is spread not just by men but by women too. My friend still thought the joke was funny, (I've not given up on her), but she no longer tells sexist jokes so much, nor racist ones at all either! I have Iwfern to thank for this change in my perception. When it comes to both sexism and racism I now see a bigger picture than I once did. How cool is THAT???

I don't find anything about DU to be "left-wing;" as a matter of fact, it's been years since there was any feeling of "underground," and the board has drifted so far to the center-right that we now promote the Democratic ticket in Republican colors. Look up.

Still, I can say great things about lots of DUers. In no particular order:

Madfloridian is a loyal Democrat who staunchly supports and defends traditional democratic principles.

NSMA, while no longer a DUer, is someone I remember with affection and respect. She is a strong, clear, smart woman.

PlaidAdder: posts infrequently, but always worth reading, and thinking about.

Uly: A man of intelligence, principle, and, thankfully, a lefty who is still at DU.

DesertRose: While she rarely stops by these days, her threads in the Meeting Room when I first joined invited me in and created community.

Dover: An open mind and heart, and a deep well of ideas, thought, and things to explore.

Zombie, always good for a cup of coffee and a discussion of good music.

There are many, many more. I could probably think of something to good to say about every DUer, even those I've battled most fiercely with.

When I read her profile at HuffPo, it knocked the wind out of me because of what she has had to endure just to get here.
Since I was born in the United States, as a child, I never felt like I couldn't trust the federal government.
I grew up in a safe, sound, secure environment here in America.
At least I thought I did, I wasn't aware of an evil federal government bureaucracy.

Because then I realized that this election will truly have an impact on every nation in the world.

163. My introduction several years ago was another Dur' labeling me a freeper...I remember smiling

when I read that and felt that I had arrived...its almost like an induction and it makes you part of a team, though so many years have passed I feel like I haven't personally accomplished a darn thing but through so many dur's those past and present, those still with us those long gone but never forgotten I feel like I have grown in ways I never thought possible, I still have loads to work on but with the help of so many here I have no doubt one day I will be able to feel as if there was a reason..

But there are two that I would like to call out, both were both strong HRC supporters.

pirhana. She reminds me a lot of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Fierce (at the time I certainly didn't appreciate it) in her support of Senator Clinton, but since the primaries has been an outstanding advocate on behalf of Barack Obama. I don't say this lightly, I am in awe.

straight shooter. She didn't get into the nasty battles, but she had always felt like a familiar soul before the primaries, and there was a time when I thought that she would leave the DU community. Of all of the wonderful Hillary supporters, the thought of not having straight shooter here was the only one that really hurt when I thought of her not being here. Turns out that she is posting again and I am thoroughly grateful for that, she is a wonderful person.
