This is getting disturbing - Michigan GOP plan to foreclose African American voters
Lose your house, lose your vote

Michigan Republicans plan to foreclose African American voters

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.

State election rules allow parties to assign “election challengers” to polls to monitor the election. In addition to observing the poll workers, these volunteers can challenge the eligibility of any voter provided they “have a good reason to believe” that the person is not eligible to vote. One allowable reason is that the person is not a “true resident of the city or township.”

The Michigan Republicans’ planned use of foreclosure lists is apparently an attempt to challenge ineligible voters as not being “true residents.”

10. Normally it takes up to a year to force a homeowner to vacate after filing a notice of for closure.

The people on that list more than likely are
still living in their foreclosed homes until
the bank takes possession.

11. That's the GOP way, when the vote count is low, they win.
Obama should know about this. Michigan is going to be a big big deal.

When are they going to come up with a 'you own too much land so you can't vote' provision?

13. I hope we can get enough lawyers to help us fight the frivolous challenges.
Unless John Sidney McCain III will allow those poor people to use one of his homes?

Do he and CIndy have any homes in Michigan?

14. This is awful, but fortunately, Macomb County is predominantly white.
Like over 90%. But it is still infuriating to think that people could lose their votes because Bush and co. fucked them over so badly. The UAW and Teamsters should take this shit and run. Macomb is all union.

If this were Wayne, Genesee, or even Oakland County, this strategy could significantly affect the election. I can't tell you how relieved I am to see this isn't Wayne. Wayne is home to Detroit and the citizens of Detroit have been through enough bullshit. But then again, if the GOP tried this in Wayne, Conyers would kick the shit out of them.

Macomb County has always been full of assholes. It is the county that gave birth to the "Reagan Democrats", after all.

says that someone may still vote at their old address for up to five years, so long as they haven't registered anywhere else.
