Correct political response. (lipstick-gate)
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 09:18 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Emphasize McCain's age, REPUBLICAN, Palin's triviality, the comical contrast of imagining Joe Biden crying himself to sleep over whatever McCain has to say...
John McCain seems to have had some hearing trouble... I didn't say Governor Palin is a pig, I said John McCain and George Bush's failed policies are a pig.

If anything, Governor Palin is the lipstick, not the pig! She's a smart, youthful, beautiful lady. She's the fresh new package to McCain campaign is using to try to make eight years of George Bush and Republican failure and low wages look like Disneyland.

Now, when I attack John McCain and he tries to hide behind his running mate, that's a sad state of affairs. That's one thing you won't hear from me... when the McCain campaign launches their next garbage dump you won't see me running around saying, "Oh no! Can you believe what that mean old John McCain said about Joe Biden?"

12. UPDATE TO OP: Having heard Senator Obama's response...
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 10:07 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Any decent person hearing Obama's response to lipstick-gate was thrilled. It was a principled and forceful response that made me want to run up an hug him. But I felt that way about Gore and Kerry and Dukakis. They spoke to ME, but I am not a swing voter.

The sad truth is that the media cannot be shamed into good behavior for more than a few hours. Rising above media pettiness is like trying to step off a moving roller-coaster.

When a story has energy you have to redirect that force, not try to stop it in its tracks. It's a little late in the game to restructure the American psyche and politial and journalistic practice.

So I'll give it a 7 out of 10. As wonderful a 'righteous man' response as can be offered, though that's not the optimal form. (I may well be the optimal form for Obama... not everyone is good at everything. But it's not the optimal form in a macro sense.)

13. The tone was important I think - authoritative, serious, righteous
Obama spoke with authority without anger. Gore never managed that.

14. It was beautiful, and may well be the best approach given Obama's personality
I will not criticize the response too much because I liked it.

I hope it is effective. It will be effective today, but it's not something the pugs need to respond to, so the pattern of defense remains. Attack > Response, Attack > Response. We need to make the pugs squeal for real... not fake outrage, but something that really hurts. retake the initiative.

But for this news cycle, a decent response.
