Now that my two children are nearly grown (16 and 21) I realize that Jackie Kennedy Onassis had it absolutely right when she said that how you raise your kids is the most important thing in the world, that if they don't turn out well nothing else you do really matters very much.
Barbara Bush, on the other hand, has been quoted as saying she doesn't think parents can take any responsibility or blame for how their kids turn out. Clearly, she preferred a hands off style of parenting. I wonder if the Bush family had nannies or other child minders raising the kids. I know that the Kennedys did, but clearly Jackie was very involved in her children's lives. And look at the differences. John Jr, before he died, was from all reports a truly nice person and still trying to figure out what he really wanted to do, but he'd completed law school, worked as an assistant DA, and started a magazine. Caroline has an undergraduate degree in something like art history, completed law school herself, and written a couple of books as well as doing various things connected with her father's legacy. Neither one has ever been arrested.
Unlike so many of the Bushes.
Remind me again about why Republicans are the family values party?
