What does this political stunt tell us about McCain?
First off it tells me that the man is trying to calculate his way to victory at any cost. He is not thinking about what is best for the country, he is certainly not thinking about what is best for Sarah Palin, and he is not even thinking about what is best for himself. If he were thinking about himself, he would have gone with Joe Lieberman, allegedly his personal preference and a person who could throw a stick or two of furniture into the empty room of his head. The furniture might not be much, but beggars can't be choosy.
Second it tells me that he is not only unprincipled, which is not surprising because after all he has been a successful politician, but he is unprincipled to a fault. In matters of policy Joe Lieberman and Sarah Palin occupy 2 different worlds. That McCain considered both of them with equal gravity means that their thinking on issues didn't much matter to him. That he picked Palin rather than his friend Lieberman means that friendship matters as little.
Finally this choice tells me that what matters to McCain is winning and not winning well. Real mavericks get the difference. Mindless dedication to winning is the political orthodoxy that got us into the political, economic, and military mess we are in. If this doesn't change, it won't matter who wins, we'll have who and what we deserve.
