ALASKA REACTION MIXED

Even in Alaska, the reaction was mixed. Republican House Speaker John Harris didn't much want to discuss Palin's qualifications for the nation's second-highest office.

"She's old enough," Harris said. "She's a U.S. citizen."

State Senate President Lyda Green, another Wasilla Republican but a longtime Palin foe, had a sharper tongue.

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?"

Other Mat-Su folks were more enthusiastic.

"Go, Sarah," said Roy Wallis, owner of a Wasilla gun store. "We're really, really excited. My kids went to school with her. Todd buys his guns here."

Outside the midtown New Sagaya store in Anchorage, Pat Shafer figured the news will be good for Alaska.

"It puts us on the map," he said. "I don't know if it's the right choice, but I think it's a really interesting choice. It's a provocative choice."

To think he can grab the Hillary voters just because he picked a woman (which he had only met twice before) It goes against his check list for his choice. I will not vote for someone who doesn't even think the insurance companies should pay for birth control and who doesn't agree that women should be paid the same as men for the same job. I, like all Alaskans, have been glued to the news media today, watching with amazement as Sarah Palin was tagged as McCain’s vice presidential running mate. Local radio talk shows are all a-buzz. The progressive station has a mixture of callers who are amused, horrified, and bewildered. The conservative station has a mixture of callers who are amused, enthusiastic, horrified and bewildered. No one is really sure how this happened, or what to make of it. Citing the fact that she was the mayor of Wasilla 2 years ago in her list of “executive experience” doesn’t even pass the giggle test in Alaska. Palin does have many supporters here in the state, but even many of them are doubting whether she can cut it in the Veep slot. A few callers have said they feel sorry for her, because they like her but she’s obviously being “used” and is way over her head. Local politicians are fiercely divided. Those who like her are generally appointees who are locally referred to as “Palin-bots” and have drawn comparisons to George Bush’s idealogical croneys. Many, Democrats and Republicans, are fierce opponents.
