he damn well better put SEVERAL women in his Cabinet!

does Obama's change and hope apply to women too?

I want some equality.

I'm tired of waiting.

----------------------

speaking of waiting:

"She can outwait them. Any woman could.
Women have waited millions of years, growing seperate as another species, with visions and priorities no man-words, no man-measurements can comprehend."

from the novel Palm Latitudes

by Kate Braverman
----------------------

come on Obama, do us proud by having SEVERAL women in your Cabinet

1. I think you can count on that.
Not because of any sexual litmus test, but simply because there are so many great female choices.

The good news is there are plenty of women who merit the job. Hopefully, if and when they're chosen, people will realize that their qualifications were the reason, not some 1970's idea of tokenism.

116. I don't think Condi Rice or Gale Norton are the best examples of female empowerment
Seriously... when it comes to cabinet positions, I hope President Obama goes with the best person for the job whomever he OR she is.

For example, if I was going to put someone in charge of health care, I'd pick Dennis Kucinich. Not because he has a penis, but because he has the best plan. However, if I was appointing a panel or commission to work on that issue, I'd ask Elizabeth Edwards to be on that panel also.

I'm sure there will be 50 million "name your cabinet" threads started here between now and November 4. Wouldn't be surprised if they start today.

Those who have suggestions of women who would be great in various cabinet positions might actually want to start such a thread. ;)

130. Of course women deserve civil rights. But Obama should pick the best candidates available for...
cabinet posts regardless of their gender. It would be wrong to deny a qualified woman a cabinet job just because she is a woman, but the reverse is also true. If a man is best qualified for a particular spot on the cabinet, then it would be wrong to deny it to him just because he is a man.

NO not Condi, but Obama's advisor Rice. I've seen her on CNN/MSNBC several times, and she's very, very good! I don't think you should have concerns about his admin. being fair to women. He certainly has given his wife a free hand to be a prominent part of his campaign, and I'm sure he'll do the same to other women who meet his qualifications.

The VP pick was not about gender and neither should the Cabinet choices be.

That said, I believe there are some very good female possibilities for Cabinet posts.

I have to admit, I was slightly disappointed at first, because I really wanted him to pick Sebelius for VP. But I think Biden is probably a better bet in terms of balancing out the ticket...it was the right move strategically, even if in my heart I wanted him to pick a woman (I would have been happy if he picked Hillary too, but I thought Sebelius was a better choice because she has executive experience and her record is more in line with Obama's brand of change). But I am sure he will have several qualified women in his cabinet.

The OP went a bit overboard in the demand department, but still... all these people whose knee-jerk reaction is "Gender doesn't matter, qualifications do" is ridiculous. Gender DOES matter. We make up more than half the population, yet only 11% (1 judge) on the Supreme Court is female. It's unbalanced and it's only right to assume that a woman should be given precedence. It's not as if there are only a handful of qualified applicants for the job. There are hundreds.

And it's the same way in Obama's cabinet. Fairly it should be 50% women, and it won't be. We should EXPECT there to be though.

You could try to guess what I'm talking about, or you could read my posts.

and THAT is what people are responding to.

It's this whole ooooo I'm so angry I'm gonna stamp my feet because my candidate isn't in there, so you damn well better put some women in the cabinet thing that just fucking EMBARRASSES me to death. Yeah, let's just throw qualifications and knowledge out the window in favor of genitals. Sure! That's a GREAT fucking idea! That'll REALLY further the cause of equality.

God. How do you guys eat without choking?

151. Apologies... Your post is an exception.
I neglected to read your last sentence in your original reply.

My point was to count the number of people who say "What does gender have to do with it? I want qualified people." It's really not an appropriate response to the OP in my opinion. I think it's fair to expect that Obama SHOULD have a fair number of women in his cabinet. Gender definitely SHOULD be part of the decision, since most than half of the citizens of this country are women.

Again, you made yourself clear in your last sentence "I'm sure there will be quite a few women in his administration." Sorry I missed that part.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we get the point. The best person who's qualified. Like when we used to only allow white men on the jury... well, dammit, they are the only ones qualified, and the only ones with adequate experience.

:eyes:

Give me a break. And here's my idealism speaking: Obama is going to represent all of us. And that means that he is going to do what's best, and what's best may be having a more fair fraction of the judges on the Supreme Court to at least make some movement toward equal representation. To do anything else would be a slap in the face to women, because there are HUNDREDS of women who would be qualified and capable more than several of the judges there now. Just like any job search, at that level, there is very little difference between the candidates, and you must make choices based on several factors. Fairly representating the more than 50% of the US population that women are, should rank pretty high among those factors.

91. It means that when someone has been periodically oppressed based on their gender,
race, or bloody creed. Would you like to know what that is about? It's about the bloody institutionalized prejudice mostly seen in gender issues and racial issues but also apparent in regards to sexuality and religion.

Don't bloody act like America is free and easy. As a Black woman I walk out every single day to shit thrown at my face. And majority of people see the color of my skin a hindrance and if it's not my skin it's my gender. This is every day.

I'm not saying that merit and qualifications are not fundamental but the reason programs like AA (which I am not totally in agreement with) are around is to right a wrong. And that wrong is oppression and persecution based on such ridiculous ideas of inferiority and then our merits and qualifications may ( and that's the operative word) take the forefront.

145. Don't play this tactic with me.
This is the same game used when people want to take down AA. Obviously not, when I said I was against AA which was established post the '68 era to recognize ALL oppressed group, which were women irrespective of solely race or creed. However, institutionalized racism is a factor that cannot be ignored and you're statement clearly shows someone who not only ignores history but also present oppresssive tactics which are still highly present.

As I said, I face racism, sexism and those who discriminate against overweight people every day. These are significant issues which can't be ignored and although I would love to live in a world without sin, the US is not one of them and I'm facing it.

I do see it as being a recognizable issue that needs to be addressed. I think the OP was OTT and showed not only her lack of trust in our candidate, but also implied that he's sexist and possilby she was someone hoping the Veep would be HRC. In any case of what it was, I understand where she's coming from however, I do disagree with much of her implications.

and he went to another firm so he could date her. Many men would never go near an assertive woman.

88. Thank you for showing so little faith in our candidate.
His largest spokes people have been women. From Sebelius to Rice, to HRC. For you to say "he better" is nonsensical since he most probably will. Wait until the cabinet as a whole will be talked about and we'll see about discussing those things. But that's hardly anything I would worry about since he's shown that women have been vital in their background, qualifications and expertise to his campaign and I'm sure several of those women will take up administrative seating in his cabinet.

This is coming from a steadfast Black Feminist.

115. Aren't you being sexist?
You being angry with men is your own issue; don't start with your ultimatums about what Obama 'better do'. You do women like myself a great disservice by even IMPLYING that a woman should be nominated for a job, even if she's not qualified. I work too damn hard for someone to patronize me and I'm sure others feel the same way.

90. How many is "several"?
Do you have a specific number or percentage in mind that will satisfy you? Are all cabinet posts equal in your estimation or are there specific posts that should be set aside for women?

This is one heck of a "concern" thread, given that its a mortal lock that "several" women will be named to Obama's cabinet, just as several women were part of Bill Clinton's cabinet and several women are part of chimpy's cabinet.

119. Please. This is embarrassing. As a lesbian feminist socialist, I'm embarrassed for you.
This is not a tone that encourages people to think highly of women. You sound like a petulant cry baby.

As progressives, let's celebrate the fact that the Democratic Party's nominee for president is African American. Let's work with him to get him in the White House, and then make demands.

I know John's not going to be anywhere to be seen in his administration, but perhaps giving Elizabeth a post will be a gesture towards both women and the ideas that they put forth on their campaign.

163. So, just as long as they have boobs and a vagina, they're cool?
So my extremely crazy great-aunt Drusilla would be a great Secretary of State? SHE'S A WOMAN, WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM? I mean, yeah, she talks to bugs. She paints naked people on every wall she can get to. She stops taking her meds a lot. She quit school in the eighth grade. She doesn't bathe very often. Chain smokes Pall Malls and was busted at the age of 72 for trying to pass off a phony prescription for Vicodin at the pharmacy.

BUT OBVIOUSLY IF SHE IS NOT PICKED OBAMA IS A BIG SEXIST, BECAUSE MY GREAT-AUNT DRUSILLA IS A WOMAN! HEAR HER CRAZY ASS ROAR!

186. Wow--what if he didn't appoint ANY female cabinet members?
That would make him the first president since FDR to do so. Do you really think he would somehow NOT manage to find any qualified women to advise him? Or are you saying you won't be satisfied unless there's a certain number, or percentage of women? Is that a quota?
