Remember the final season of The West Wing?
This presidential primary race and season is playing out exactly like the presidential race on the show. Tough establishment candidate just barely gets defeated by an unknown latino congressman who then faces a very strong republican "maverick" who leads for most of the race (Alan Alda) until Jimmy Smitts (Matt Santos) pulls out a last minute victory. This race is playing out almost exactly like the final season.

2. I was thinking that yesterday!
But:

1. Obama is actually ahead, even if it's only very slightly.

2. Alan Alda's character was decent. He didn't use evidence of marital wrongdoing by Smitts' character. If the Repubs IRL found anything like that, we'd be toast.

3. If only John McCain
even remotely resembled the Alan Alda character I wouldn't be feeling like an avalanche of doom is decending on us if McCain one. THere was no pandering to the religious right from that Republican.

4. Ah, the irony
We are watching West Wing (again) and that's where we are at. I noticed the eerie similarity as well, though Vinick (Alda) was a feasible candidate and a far more threatening foe than McCain.

Matt Santos is a young, married man with two small children and an outspoken wife. Have to say I prefer Michelle Obama to the Helen Santos character though.

5. Big difference.
Alan Alda's character was of the old school conservatives and he had some integrity unlike the Republican candidate running today. But yes, the similarities there are eerie in spite of the fact that there wasn't eight years of a destroy America administration headed by a sot.
