McCain's old friend and POW comrade made
an ad in 1999 about McCain, faith and Christmas. No mention of the cross-in-the-dirt.
McCain's "Christmas Story" Ads
John McCain is taking a lot of heat for a story he first told in his 1999 Memoir "Faith of My Fathers" about a guard who loosened his arms during one particularly painful torture session. The story goes that months later that guard approached McCain, at Christmas, and quietly drew a cross in the sand. McCain made this story into a campaign ad.
This isn't the first time McCain has put together a "Christmas Story" ad. Back in 1999, during the primary season, he released a radio ad entitled "A Christmas Story", narrated by Swift Boat veteran "Bud" Day, who was McCain's senior ranking officer and fellow ex-POW. According to an article on Salon in 1999 by Jake Tapper, the ad stated:
"Christmas of 1971 was centered around scripture that John had gotten from
the first Bible we had been able to get from the Vietnamese," Day says in the
first radio ad. "John composed an extremely compelling sermon that night about
the importance of Christmas ... I think it was certainly a shot to everyone's
morale to hear those Christian words in that very un-Christianlike place."
Odd that he chose to highlight this experience instead of the moving cross story.
